What do you think of them

I have a very negative attitude. They do not give anything for the development of the plot, they only break the pace of the story. And given the fact that the creation of these events requires time and effort, they only lead to a delay in the development of the main storyline.

I think they can be a nice distraction IF something actually fun and intersting is done with them, sadly that is rarely the case
As I said, can't find a good one

I prefer an update that continues the history, to think it's better the some thematic scene.

Don't care one way or the other, but hardly ever download or play them.

I like them if they are well done. They can be a humorous spin-off. And I also don't agree that they have to be separate downloads, necessarily. If they fit in the story - say, the girls go trick-and-treating within the main story and it turns naughty - a holiday special can be a regular story update too. And those are the best kind.

it's true that it delays an update, but it gives you a preview of the sex scenes well before the story.

I find them really annoying - they detract from the main story line and divert resources from the game development.

Not a fan.
Only when it is an add on for an already finished game it could be a nice DLC. For the rest I am not fuzzed about it.

Im guessing most devs do it because the are burnt out and tired of doing the same thing. Likely why a lot of games are abandoned or they move to a new game. So they decide putting the characters in different outfits and locations could keep it fresh so to speak. Id rather a dev integrate the scenes into the game directly and help it continue the story progression rather than it being a standalone small game.

I'm not a fan, but if the event is avoidable and just a bonus that's not part of the main content, I don't mind. I agree with @Loliholic that in some games it's imposing and breaks the mood.

I just merged 4 different threads all on this same subject or some small variance of the same subject. Come on guys please look around before starting threads on shit already being talked about..... Now I am going back to my supper....

It's good if its not a separate download to the main game

usually they are nor a part of a game plot and because of that they are annoying to me

The same scenes that I see 90% of the time in the game will be present in the specials with a slight halloween/Christmas variation. The other 10% of content that I play the game for will be absent. It's vanilla and boring and a waste of renders

I don't mind them when they are integrated into the plot. I don't like them when they are side stories that aren't part of the game's canon.

really hate holiday specials, always skip them if there is an option
they never fit the story, always out of place
~80% of them! Let's beat the developers with a stick :devilish:
None. They're either forced or there's no purpose to them being set at that time of the year. Or they're cringe af.
Does anyone here hate them like me? Anytime I see a holiday update I get pissed. They are an excuse for the dev to take a break from the main game.
And because I know they were working on the shitty holiday crap I also know the main game is delayed.
Yes, I know there are a few exceptions to this but 90% is to reuse assets and ship a crap update.
there are stand alone games that come out during the holiday time i like. the holiday specials are extremely lazy excuses to delay the real meat of the game. further insulting are the devs that take forever to release said special so you get a christmas special in june.
i dont like specials because most of them are lazy and its time they should have spent on the main story/game
Exactly. Why make a holiday special when you can just get your next update ready?

Most of the "holiday special" games I played didn't add anything story wise or was just a boring re-skin (putting the Santa / Crimmeh (my drunk dad's way of saying Christmas) gear on). Save the render time, and update the game faster instead.
I honestly don't know why these exist except that devs must enjoy making them for them to be included in so many games.

The only time it actually bothers me is when the release of actual updates is moving at a snail's pace.
yea I'd have to agree the only way I would be fine with one is if its a part of the regular update like if an update is gonna release around Xmas anyway so the devs add a little atmosphere like a sexy santa or elves costume
Agreed. Its a massive waste of time and energy for the dev and usually takes away from the story anyway.
None, always feel out of place and never fit the story...
None, seasonal updates always suck and always grind the plot progress to a halt.
I find that they are out of place with the story in the games or that it just does not go with the pace of the story. I would prefer them not to be in the games or I would not download the specials if they are separate, but available for download. I would have to go with Christmas being the best that I have experienced.
Totally agree. The feel like a monumental waste of effort that could have been directed toward finishing the actual game. I sometimes feel that devs do this because they've run into some kind of issue in the storytelling and holiday specials offer the opportunity to slam some mindless content out to stall the fanbase.
I dont like them. They often mix characters that havent met or interacted yet. They feel forced. They usually come as a dev burns out, cannot thinkg of anything because they didnt start their project with a proper outline, or they're transitioning to the milking of their content.

Never seen a good outcome from one.
The main problem with holiday content for me is that it often feels like it's something the dev is doing so they don't have to work on their main story content while making it look like they're adding content to their game... There's also the fact that most of the time the holiday content is really boring and generic as well.
Agree. Not even slightly interested. Rather have them work on the real game. Not only that, they often come out after the holiday is over. They tend to also be silly.
I don't like it when it's something that is not Canon to the game.

If it's not part of the story, then I don't care.

And I also don't like them because. It's an excuse for lazy sex scenes with no build up. Then after that back to the main update where all of this doesn't matter.
Maybe so but they are made to drive up pledges and as a gift to their supporters.

I've played a few good ones and a few bad ones.

No one has to like them but they serve a purpose. 🤷‍♂️
Exactly, it not only takes you out of the story currently being told, but often isn't even a real part of the story. I've seen a few framed as some sort of bizarre fever dream.
I really dislike holiday specials, I never download them (unless they are intentionally sewn into the game). 1. The developer wastes his resources, distracting from the main plot of the game, and these holiday episodes, as a rule, do not add anything to the game. 2. Cultural barrier. Halloween has not taken root in our country, and Christmas is in the background compared to New Year's Eve. Besides, Christmas is celebrated here by religious people, and practicing Christian believers are only 20% of the total population. March 8 (International Women's Day) is incomparably more popular here:)
So these Christmas-Halloween episodes are perceived as something completely alien, not touching any strings of the soul.
Opinions on Holiday updates for games.

Personally, i could do without them. They take away time from normal updates and never seem to add anything of worth.
I don't like them. They act as a "fantasy" of the MC and add nothing to the main story and sometimes they just skip all the build up to just make you fuck every woman out of the blue, when maybe in the main game you're not even at a kiss yet.
Can't say I've ever really seen a 'holiday special' that I enjoyed more than I would a regular update, so I guess I have to say no.

Granted, some devs are superhuman enough to put out both, but they're a minority. More frequently I'll see a Christmas update that's almost finished in time for Valentine's Day...
It has to be a break for burnout or something, seemingly no one enjoys them but they're put into so many games
Holiday or whatever, I don't like side stories that come out before the game is finished
I agree than more often than not they tend to detract from a game more than enhancing the experience. If you want to celebrate the holidays, a few seasonal renders are more than enough.
They are all pointless and divert resources from the main game.
Resources are limited, don't be an idiot with them.
I almost never play them unless they get experimental with their content or the character design are good and I want to see more. They are mostly a waste of time if it doesn't progress the plot,
They're a waste of time that could be better spent on moving the game forward
Holiday updates just feel like the same thing over and over again. How many times do we need to have Christmas outfits added?
What do you think of holiday specials in Adult games? I HATE them, because usually they're dumb AND they delay getting the next real episode done.
I don't like them, especially the fact that it delays the progress of the actual game
If they're part of the main game, just happening alongside an holiday, like some sitcom series, I don't mind.
If they're standalone releases that don't connect to the game, like a non-canon spinoff, then I hate it.
I have a very negative attitude. They do not give anything for the development of the plot, they only break the pace of the story. And given the fact that the creation of these events requires time and effort, they only lead to a delay in the development of the main storyline.

I have a neutral stance on special VNs as I don’t play them often my self however, it's essential to recognize their value for developers. These specials serve as a vital tool for reigniting creativity and alleviating stress. Burnout is a pressing issue that plagues many developers, particularly within small teams, potentially leading to the abandonment of their main projects. Specials offer a refreshing outlet for developers to create something fun and offbeat without compromising the integrity of their primary VN. While they may seem like a diversion of resources, it’s crucial to remember that everyone deserves a break—after all, creativity thrives when people can step away and recharge.
