One of the very great things about visual novel games is the way they let us take different paths .. those with different preferences can find their preference.

While I dont like dicks, if Friends In Need continues for a long time, it could be good emotional story telling if one of the story lines has the MC eventually supporting Mason to get gender-affirming surgery.

Part of my "pleasure" with some of these games -- but definitely not the majority of them -- is when the writers tell good emotional stories .. even when those emotional parts are not about romance or lewdness.

Something I like about Friends in Need is the relative depth of the characters .. making meaningful character-driven stories possible .. while still delivering some hot lewds

That is very true and some of the best games have a good balance out there of great story telling and decent lewd scenes.
Also, as we have seen with this dev, is that does allow people to pick and choose how much the player is willing to see too.

I went the other direction .. maximizing caring choices. I have dipped into some of the rougher paths, but quickly end up choosing the kinder options again because I dont actually want to be mean to any of the potential LI characters . A good sign to me of quality character development by the writer.

The amount of guilt I feel for the things I make the MC do is exactly how I gauge how much depth those characters have. Every step of the way when playing this game I've thought to myself "Holy shit she doesn't deserve to be treated like this, my character is a monster!"

Always happy to see an update to this game. Definitely one of my favorites. I haven't even done the dark path yet, I forgot all about it.

I gave up on the Dark Path too. I played a couple of blackmail, revenge or corruption themed AVNs but the girls in those games were deliberately made to fit the theme. In Friends in Need though, its kicking them when they're already down, plus their determination to struggle through life despite their helplessness and their innocence just made me want to genuinely help and uplift them instead.

One of the games that actually made me feel bad about being a dick, most games don't really make you feel bad. A bit uncomfortable sure but never outright just... "wow I am an asshole huh" so good on the game, just wish there was a bit more.

Duality of man, this game has some of the best wholesome routes I've ever seen and also some really depraved dark paths. Both fun, of course
