On the topic of VAM, does anyone know of any methods to improve performance in general? Like addons or modifications to the game to help. I know of some of the ones on the actual VAM site but I still feel like its not enough.
Bit late to the party, but there are a few mods and code patches to boost performance in VAM.
The

plugin on the hub gives you a bit greater control of various performance properties, and there are some guides on the hub about performance as well. Load GiveMeFPS as a session plugin and include it in your default session plugins.
I seem to remember there being an unofficial code patch that actually modifies the .exe somewhere out there but I'm not sure 1) if it's compatible with the last security update or 2) where to find it

I don't know if I have it on my current install or not but I seem to remember it did provide a boost, if you can find it. Not sure I'd advise playing around with modifying your exe if you're not well-versed in this stuff though. Maybe forget I mentioned this one, I dunno.
There are also BepinEx plugins that can improve performance.
You'll need to install

to your VAM directory, then add these (WARNING: I did not test these for compatibility but if they don't work together or at all you can remove them (and bepinex if you need):

- This may actually be the patch I was thinking of above, not sure... I currently have this installed and it works. Make a backup copy of winhttp.dll in your VAM folder, then extract the zip file to your VAM folder (so that files in the BepinEx folder go in BepinEx, etc)
- - I have NOT installed this one, and it appears to be vibe coded... use at your own risk. It changes the way caching works, so that it doesn't have to load every package every time VAM loads. It also replaces winhttp.dll, so have a copy of all three: vanilla, from Vam Performance Plugin, and from VamScanCache, and try each to see if the program loads. If you use var management software, this may not be necessary.
I recommend using the first BepinEx plugin and not the second, but I'm not your mom and can't tell you how to live your life.
Speaking of not loading every package at startup: Use VAR/package management software of some kind! There are programs available that let you load just a few plugins at startup, and even load content dynamically/asynchronously (after game startup). This speeds up the game dramatically at startup and when browsing content.
There are like a dozen different programs, some new, some old, but my favorite so far and the software I use is VPM/VPB, which is actually two things:
- is an external program that helps you manage and organize your vars, get rid of duplicates, trace dependencies, etc
- is a .dll (place in your VAM folder) that works with VPM and gives you an in-game interface to navigate and load content.
There are so many others and each has its own pros and cons. Be careful managing your VARs and maybe look up if there's a guide for using VPM/VPB.
Hapy vamming!
