I feel like issue around "step-X" for me is: the writing. IF the story is about and actual step-X relation-> great! lots of story potential . when the "step-X" feels inserted like with "landlady/roommate" to just dodge censorship I prefer the game post patch.

that said: if MC gets a step(or true) sibling/parent, I dont like it if that is their "title" or "relation" in "normal" conversations . the whole "oh no! step bro, I'm stuck in the washing machine" just feels so fake over "oh no! *MC name*, I'm stuck in the washing machine". same with a parent relation, ether use mom/dad or their name. I got a step-mom at 11 years old, now 25 years later I never once have called her "Step mom" since my mom is still around I have always called
my step mom by her name.

I think its been popularized by porn here they repeat the relation to make sure that "taboo" gets checked by the viewer even if they skip to the action/cultured part of the vid.
only time a step relation ship should be pointed out is when it is brought is during introductions or to bring it up as an issue.

Depends on the writer. Some devs can only mention step once and still make the rest of the game make sense to get around some censorship. If they game isn't focused on family i find it doesn't really effect the story much because not a lot of emphasis is placed on the family aspect.

The step crap is worse in my opinion not only because there are people that act as if a step anything is the same as someone related by blood (even talking with disgust to a relationship), but also because they lose most of the point of incest, especially when the steps-"insert relationship here" have known each other for a very small amount of time which is how it is most of the time (and my biggest problem with it), If at least they made something like parents marrying when the kids where 1, and they grew up doggeder, or the mother/father got married when the kid is a baby you can even make an argument, but noooooooooooo

For me, it doesn't kill it in and of itself. I have a whole rant about this in a few places. Basically, I hate how overacted, non-believable, and utterly line towing it is. Like, I get censorship is a pain in the ass, and I'd throw all the bullshit puritanical people who opposed it into the ocean and let Evil Surgeons sharks have them. Using step to offset and make it "real but not really" annoys me enough, but my main gripe is the horrible way porn portrays itself. No matter the media, whether story, acting, mechanics, or whatever. "step" incest is inferior to anything real. I don't care about morality, laws, or anyone's sense of superiority when it comes to incest. If I go looking for it and it's not real, make it believable. Otherwise you're wasting all out time.

Patreon doesn't allow incest, so there are devs use step-incest to avoid being banned and at the same time give the idea of incest situations, but as i said it isn't taboo
