Patreon initially didn't really care about incest; it was pressure from payment processors that led to the ban—or at least that’s what was implied in conversations with developers at the time. Even back then, it involved PlayPal (which had been acquired by the group that owns Visa and Mastercard—consumer-facing names, though the actual owner is the Vanguard Group, which controls payment and clearing systems worldwide). They were the ones who decided to ban incest and other sexual themes from entertainment and dictate how we spend our money.

I’m not saying this to make excuses for them; I haven't put any money into Patreon since the incest ban, and I recommend that fans of incest and sexual content do the same or choose alternative funding methods. Steam at least stirred the pot—even though they eventually caved—but nowadays I prefer buying from other stores like GOG whenever possible.

To my dismay, this has led to a watered-down version of incest; if you look at older games and texts, the taboo was explored more deeply, and the fact that they were relatives was the central point of the relationship.

Regarding "step-incest": if the story shows a long-standing relationship and an emotional, familial bond *before* the incest occurs, then it’s valid. I’ve played four games tagged as "Incest" where the protagonist only meets his ex-stepmother or ex-stepsisters after his father’s death. At that point, there is no blood, emotional, or legal tie—the protagonist could even legally marry the ex-stepmother. Where is the incest in that? That model is like saying the protagonist is the brother of any woman his father flirted with, even if it was just a platonic thing back when he was a child.

If there is a familial and emotional bond, step-incest isn't a problem; but if that connection is missing, it’s just annoying.

I think the best solution is to label it as a "guardian" relationship.
Editad
I didn’t mean guardian — I didn’t notice the translation. I meant tutor/teacher, someone who accompanies the child’s educational development from an early age.

And allow customization by the player. Same as with age for loli content.
