Did you learn english because of visual novels?

In my country learning English is traditionally done via private lessons, since public school English classes are a joke. Nevertheless, video games were paramount for developing solid reading skills in kids my generation. After that, listening was best practiced by watching English speaking TV shows and movies with English subtitles, so that what is said matches what you read (otherwise you just read the subs in your language and pay little attention to the voices).

I am curious about utilizing similar techniques to learn Japanese though. I have never managed to progress beyond hiragana, katakana and basic phrases, since I find learning languages extremely boring. Is there some platform, where I can read Manga and have the translation readily available (e.g. by hovering)? It doesn't have to be Manga, but they have less text compared to VNs and no time restrictions like anime.

No, I did it for rpg books, songs, movies and tv series.
I'm learning Japanese for visual novels though.

I learned the basics from watching '90s Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.

I only speak English, but I would absolutely love to learn Japanese. Sadly I am dyslexic and would need a private tutor to learn it. Oh well.....

I learned English "alright-ish" fairly young because the TV shows in my country were shit or poorly translated English (I had no clue what the original script was... but even as a kid... I knew it wasn't what I heard.). This way I could see the shows in their original English.

I improved my English to increase the options of the countries I could go to after my divorce and the child payments finally ended and I was allowed to leave the country... in my case... forever.

AVN English was a nice bonus, but, let's be real here, most AVNs have the same script (based on the tags) so you kind of don't really need to know the language. (poking fun at my favourite first, then the other extreme)

Harem: Gary Stu MC walks around with a horse dick. All of the women magically fall in love with said dick and are perfectly fine that MC has multiple LI.
NTR: Loser MC can't satisfy his LI. She's frustrated and gradually does more and more explicit cheating, eventually humiliating the MC for lack of size/prowess.

No, but I learn new words and idioms

Well for me I learn first from movie and now still learning from games/comics(manga) and visual novels

It has helped, I think, and to live in an English-speaking country, of course. Now I can say things in English that I shouldn't say.

With the amount of Engrish in VNs, I'm not sure it's wise to leave your English education in the hands of porn games :ROFLMAO:

I started playing VN some years ago, at the time I didn't know anything of english, never ever had a class before, well besides from my public school but in my country they only teach the verb "to be" every single year again and again.
Back to the track, I ended up getting caught by the games, even without understanding what was written and kept going till I decided to open the Google translate on the side and started translating. Before I thought I started reading more and more each passing day. Started to watch some videos and play some voiced VN till reach today.
So thanks to porn games I learned to read and listen a new language and write too, well, kinda... Just don't ask me to speak.

So did you had a similar experience when you got your first contact with this kind of games?

(Hope everyone can understand what I wrote)
Totally, it really helped in developing the language.

I'm pretty late to the AVN-Party - so no.
Next to ten school lesson years it really helped me that i had to translate game walkthroughs from english to my language. Maybe even more than my english lessons ^^.

It was not possible to me learn it at a good level, but there was a desire to learn Japanese and take another level of immersion

Nahh,, learned english the way any gen-xer did,,, watching cartoons and songs(lyrics).
No subs or voice over back in those days for cartoons. Some of my first english phrases involved things as a Death Laser Beam,,, and not forgetting:
By the power of Grayskull...... I have the POWERRRRRRRRRRRRR.

If my writing and speaking (my god, what a horror...) are still mediocre in English, my comprehension has improved thanks to the games.

Sometime, but english is indeed a widely language and is often used in technology, and communication.

The TV taught me English & how to read. Those 'Muricans had something called Sesame Street & The Electric Company on "Your local PBS station". I've used English so long seeing ENGRISH in VN's annoy me to the point that if I like the game and the dev I'll fix the typos in the code.
