I'm really curious if for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars for the original 1977 cut if it really is that as alleged to be. Will people go and see it. In Feb of 2027. Since Disney is being really stupid and doing only a limited release. They also have no plans for the other two films or 4K UHD discs for home media at this moment. But they are also restoring The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and reverting all of Lucas changes and all the cgi added since 1997.

If its anything like the anniversary for Revenge of the Sith it won't get enough premium screens. In my local theater it was empty because it was on the smallest little screen standard laser. Meanwhile Sinners was on the Imax. Some other film was on the other large format screen. I haven't paid for a film ticket since 2015. And the ticket prices being 20 dollars for standard non premium, not Imax, not Dolby cinema. Ripoff.

Will Disney MCU stop having flops. Will Avengers Doomsday actually break the trend. Next Christmas or Whenever it is coming out.

Will the Spider-Man be a good movie. I have given up on DC. James Gunn Superman was not good. The Supergirl trailer looks terrible. I don't know what else there is to go see, unless you go to see Dances with Smurfs 3. also known as Fire and Ash. That is in the theater right now.

I am very tired of the endless remakes, legacy sequels and comic book films. Or requels that Hollywood keeps churning out. I haven't been really engaged with going to the cinema probably since The Star Wars Prequels, The Matrix trilogy and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And I went twice a week to the cinema in the 1990s because tickets were cheap.

The last ones I remember seeing are Dark Knight Rises, Indiana Jones IV, The Hobbit film 1 and 2. Star Trek Into Darkness. The Force Awakens. I think I went and saw X-men Days of Future past but its very vague. Of course, I saw Raimi Spider-Man 2 and 3. And Amazing Spider-Man 2. Pirates of the Caribbean part 2. I saw Minority Report and The awful remake of War of the Worlds. The ET Special Edition with the Walkie Talkies. from 1999 to now i haven't seen that many. Few presentations have been spectacular or had that wow factor. You need to go to a premium equipped theater. Now they do 4K projection. But I miss 35mm film. And I miss IMAX film not liemax. And I've never had the privilege of watching 70mm standard non imax or non omnimax. When they used to take a 35mm print and blow it up to 70mm and have a 6 track audio mix.

As for theaters closing due to recession. Well, my favorite theater closed due to covid lockdown. And they also closed another. The only one left is the theater at the mall. Which has terrible seats. Horrible bathrooms. Expensive tickets. No day passes and no movie lovers program for most new movies. Even Matinee is like 17.99. I don't even want to know what a popcorn costs or a soda now. I do know a night at the movies is getting to be for the rich. not like eating out at a restaurant or going to a bar is any cheaper, in the current year which happens to be 2026.

They get about half or less than the patronage they got before the, well you know. Teach people to stay home. offer them other options. Like streaming. Don't be surprised when people don't return, never mind the subject matter of the movies and the soapbox Hollywood has. God forbid people want an escape and fantasy, not to be reminded of the dull rigors of life, the boring grind. For two hours, the escape of the prisoner as Tolkien called it in on Fairy Stories. He was talking about a secondary world created in fiction. I Am talking of cinema.

Not really dead, more like they became a little bit more prestigious. Most movies that are aimed for release and get a lot of box office results are the ones that are anticipated.

Yeh, I think it's double edged sword...

In 2020, I wasn't allowed to go in without some stupid useless stick in my nose test. Or getting vaccinated with some unproved vaccine.

We also got in the age of activism and LGBT+ bullshit. Like come on, I want to see a story, not some fat white-man hating lesbian every f*cking movie. Or some idiot talking with pronounce. I'm there for the story not to appease some mental health issues. Or often you have characters, where you don't even know if they are man or female, just look at the new quantum leap series. And I'm even talking about all the useless white man in the movie, it's painfully to watch, where the strong black guy is the only one using his brain or so...

Even that wouldn't be such a problem, if it weren't for replacing all the known characters from redhead to black girl, the is a long list, and don't forget the entitlement in those characters...

Just for example we had Iron Man + Thor, you got 2 characters that lost everything and build up their lives again, made it better. By the end of the story we have 2 hero's. Then we got the whole series like Captain Marvel types, an entitled snob, where there is no real build up, no mistakes, just directly plays the hero she is supposed to become.

So for one they burned me with refusing entry, and second there are no real good stories anymore. And even if there are, they are mostly ruined by activism.

And yes we can download them with bittorrent in good quality, but also the price, come one movie 20-30 euro's. I used to go to the cinema for 5-7 euro's like 25 years ago on monday movie night. Yes I earn more now 25 years ago, but not 5 times as much.

I can say the same with restaurants, like 25 years ago we paid 9-15 euro's for a meal, maybe add 2.5 for a coke. Now if we want to got I need to pay 50 euro's per person for all you can eat including drinking. But still that's about 4-5x times as much. Same with the theater.

Of course don't forget 25 years ago I was alone, now I got wife+kids, making it 4-5x more expensive. Don't forget that with young kids, it was very difficult to go the cinema's or to the restaurant.

For that money we can go to the amusement park, and have 1 day of fun, instead of 1-2 hours. And I'm not even talking about the insane tip policies, like come on I pay 20 times as much as 25 years ago, and you still want tip, and not tip a few bucks but like 30%? Are you f*cking crazy.

So in the end we order delivery at home, buy our drinks ourselves. Just download the movies, and watch it at home.

It seems I'm not the only one...

i like to go every now and then with a friend.
went to see alien romulus when it was out in 4DX and we loved that

meh not dead yet but definitely dying, there's only a few movies a worthy of seeing at a theater

I don't even remember the last time I went to a theater to watch a movie. You can get anything online even movies that a currently playing in theaters.

i hadnt seen a movie in a theatre in a very long time until i saw Barbie. It wasnt as expensive as i thought it would be and it was nice to have a good experience with the movie

I haven't gone in years, and the last time was purely for the sake of a family member; before that it had been years since. Saw Last Jedi, before that saw Force Awakens, neither of the groups from those outings had any interest in Rise of Skywalker, and other than that the last memory I really have of watching something in theatres was Return of the King. It's been dead to me a long time I suppose, just not that interested in passive entertainment.

Still, one person's interests don't kill an entertainment venue. But a couple years of policy that teaches a bunch of people they don't really need it sure seems to.

i think theaters are pretty much dead, i can enjoy a movie at home just as much

we all know streaming and such has taken an impact to the theater experience for movies....... but what about the movies? maybe it is also movies that bring you to the theater that are dying also........ some are even made directly for the streaming service now 😭

also mentioning everyone usually already has the netflix.... hbo.... apple tv subscription they pay for any way.......... so why spend the same such money...... or more....... for a viewing of such a thing that will be on the service in a few simple months?

Probably. The technology changed and the business model hasn't.

Take the music industry. They used to make their big money off of album sales and had low priced concerts to promote the albums and drive more sales. Then came CDs (digital) and later high speed internet. People figured out how to easily rip and distribute music which killed album sales. The solution was to turn the model around and get the big money on concert tickets and use the music to drive higher ticket prices.

Now look at movies. We now have 100+ inch UHD TVs and 7 channel surround sound in our living rooms and high speed internet to deliver streaming content. What motivation do I have to load the family in the car, drive to the theater, and pay $100+ for a 2 hour movie and snacks?

Most of the smart content providers have either started streaming their content (Disney+, Paramount+, etc) or bought/leased rights to content (Netflix, Sling, Hulu, etc). Movie theaters are dead, they just haven't realized it yet.

Movies in theatre dead? Certainly not where I live. In fact many many people love the movies, especially for treat and a family day out, so, movie theatre here are flourishing nicely. At least seems that way. IMO the TV, regardless their size and capability, cant replace a theatre experience. Plus to see the first release on movie screen can also be fun.
