I take my daughters to the movies regularly, but yes, sadly, it is definitely dead. We were at the premiere for Inside Out 2 on Friday night and there were only 3 other people in the theater.

When you're short like me (5'3") it often gets ruined by someone tall sitting in front in the next couple rows. Plus no beer, no being able to pause for bathroom breaks, etc - and of course the extreme cost. Streaming services are for rich people - sailing the high seas is affordable.

Way too long. Anything close to 2 hours I watch half one night half the next. Something REALLY long would be in 3 parts.

I wouldn't say that they are completely dead just yet, but the lack of remarkable movies coming out lately and the prevalence of streaming puts theaters in one of the worst positions they could be in.

Ticket prices are too high and there are a lot of other choices like streaming. At best certain event movies will make money and even there they can flop, the audience is fickle at best. Everyone has tried to diagnose what is wrong with cinema and not one has come up with a bullseye answer.

There's basically no reason for me to go to the theater nowadays, it's maybe a once a year thing at most. I'd rather just wait a few months and watch from the comfort of my home.

Much better to watch them stream on my TV at home.

I regret not having seen the first part in theatres. Made up for it going with 3 different groups for Dune 2.

The era of movie theaters died with the death of copies of movies on film. Now digital media are used, which in principle, given the spread of the 6K format among ordinary users, is practically no different from watching movies at home, if you have good equipment. Yes, the sound is still better in theaters. But not the image on the screen. So yes, the great era of the Lumière brothers is dead.
Whether it is good or bad is not for me to judge.

Additionally, I'm lazy AF, so going to the cinema involves getting dressed > going to the cinema > watching it > going back home.
Whereas staying at home I just have to press Play.
