Personally (and this isn't a knock, I love the game) I consider Desert Stalker more of a map-enhanced VN. There's a map and you can go places, yes, but unless there's a story event waiting in that location there's usually not much to do there.

Something like Masters of Raana is what I think of in terms of a real open-world game; the world is fully navigable and interactable, regardless of whether or not there's story-related stuff in a given location.
