Last in, first out. I thought that Central/South America avoided much, or most, of the fighting in WWII, so perhaps it's not that influential for Columbians' lifespans at the time, I dunno.

And regarding what people will do to each other, I think that you misunderestimate what a person will do when they believe they are safe to do so. All crimes have been part of humanity for as long as recorded history. Any person might think that they wouldn't steal, for example, but if real opportunity cropped up (a riot where everyone is masked up for example), some succumb (looters in the example case). Other crimes like torture, murder, rape, etc., will have some percentage of people who will do them for various reasons. Humans have demons, and resisting them is supposedly part of being civilized. It still happens and has happened for all of history.
