I keep on fixing the opening scenes from The Phantom Menace when Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are acting as mediators.

And then I just picture Rey and Fin in that same capacity, almost like a buddy cop movie. Going out, solving problems, and looking for for sensitive children to be trained in the ways of the Jedi.

You have Poe and Chewbacca and R2 (BB8, not R2, or both) and 3PO rounding out the cast, with proacting as the liaison to The Republic.

Keep the retro futuristic feel, mash up your westerns and samurais, and just tell good stories that are finally separated from the Skywalker family.
