If the 'Teleporters' from ST work as described, there's little reason to beam anyone: if you have the molar weight of material on hand you just get their pattern and replicate them on the ship and leave them where they were. Unless they're in a bad spot, now there's two of them to do stuff, one in each spot. As you said, it's a cloning machine not a transportation device.
