Anyone play any good retro style games lately? I really liked WH40K Boltgun and Dread Delusion and wanna find more like them.

'Retro style' is a bit of a hard genre for me to pin down, but Cuphead is great if you like action/platformers, and its art style is incredible. Super meat boy is a good classic platformer that requires a lot of precision and is very fun. But you could always go back and play retro games too. Half Life, for instance, is still an amazing game, despite being over 20 years old. What other kinds of genre are you into?

Yup - Eternum. And Nova keeps getting cuter.

Don't know about "same vein" since it's pretty unique - though one Dev did almost a scene-for-scene ripoff with a very similar plot, but that's been abandoned. If the "look" is what you mean, it's done in HS2 by someone that's gotten very good with that style of asset

Other VNs with great graphics, good plot/decent story line and cute LIs, that I really like, include Artemis (just released and update a few days ago), The Unbroken, Chasing Sunsets, Single Again and Leap of Faith (get out your hanky!). Caribdis, the Dev of Eternum, has a completed another VN called Once in a Lifetime, done in HS, so graphics aren't as good, but story and music are great.

One thing I think Caribdis does better than anyone else is the audio - the blend of ambient sounds, music, vocalizations (not "voiced", though this current episode has a narration track for part of it that absolutely fits in and is essential) - just seems to be better than others. I suggest good stereo speakers or a decent set of headphones/earbuds when you play this one.

I've noticed Honey Select gets a lot of crap from people but even as someone that appreciates my "graphics" shall we say in VN's, Cosy Cafe will always be one of me and my wife's favorite games and the graphics, while not realistic, are more than enough to draw you in and I've said it before but that game made both of us cry.

Money or Morals was also fucking amazing and it still breaks my heart that Ronovan has abandoned it (at least for now). He took the engine to sexy levels in my opinion.

Honey Select 2 is definitely more visually impressive but if you're playing a VN just for the scenes why not just watch porn? The "N" of "VN" is always the more important, at least to me.

Skimming over your suggestions, they all look pretty good. You might have just given three people some good material, Tosser.

Ive played Cuphead and Half Life. those were fun. didnt care for Super Meat Boy really.
Ive played a few of these Kings Field style games like Lunacid, Monomyth and Dread Delusion and had a lot of fun with those. but I like Rpgs, FPS, Metroidvanias, Point and Click games of all types and I like a horror games if their not the ones made in a week in Unity.

There's also Hexen, Rise of the Triad: Dark War, Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Marthon, Shadow Warrior, Redneck Rampage...

I'm not sure how many (if any) of these games are available but hopefully some names can get you started.

I remember Rise of the Triad quite fondly because it released while I was still very young and my Dad, who was very open to me playing violent video games even at that age due to my nightmares and night terrors - thinking games of the time like Doom could be a positive influence (which they were, for me) because you're literally fighting demons and monsters - hesitated with Rise of the Triad because the enemies in that game can surrender and you can choose to kill them anyway, unarmed and defenseless.

He took the time to explain why he was holding back for a while with that one, and then we played it together and I remember the first time I shot one of the characters after they surrendered. All he did was ask me why I did it. "..they would have just tried to hurt me again." is what I told him and it made him smile. He told me later that the reason he smiled was because I thought about it, weighed the consequences, and chose to keep myself safe.

As far as modern retro "style" games are concerned, I'd have to do more research. Beyond AVN's with my wife and game time with my kids I don't really have a lot of time to game myself anymore so I'm not in the loop there. Feel free to DM me your interests or mention here anything I can use to try and dial-in some recommendations for you though because I'm more than happy to help.

Yea Ive played some of the doom games (I think 1-3) and played Quake as well.

Hexen looks pretty good imo. And Rise of the Triad sounds pretty good from how you describe it. Ill check it out too. Ill start with those and Ill message you with some of the ones ive tried.

Balatro is amazing. Sooooo much replayability, and easy to pick up and put down if your life is like that. If you like deckbuilders like Slay the Spire or Monster Train, its an absolute must.

I've definitely wish listed it on Steam. They are offering a really good bundle for Balatro and Slay the Spire, but I already have later (which I have yet to play). Thank you for your response.

I suppose it's the eternal struggle of the introvert; hide in our dank dens, or emerge into the world and try to pretend to be extroverted (and thus become EXHAUSTED)? I've never found a good answer, though drinking certainly makes the talking-to-other-people thing easier, both online and IRL.

I am also 90% introvert, according to Myers Briggs and I drank my whole life since I was a teen. Which helped me over come my social and general anxiety. But back on Feb 14, 2019, I decided to quit drinking, as it was getting out of hand, I was doing stupid shit and I had a fatty liver and the meds I was taking said I shouldn't drink when taking them, so I've been sober since. It has NOT been easy being social while being constantly sober. One of the meds I' m on, has removed most of my anxiety, so I'm still adjusting to what that feels like as I've been anxious my whole like. Anyways, I wanted to share my perspective, you do you.

Balatro is really fun. Getting your score to go ridiculously high is very satisfying, lots of unlockables and it has a handful of different decks that give you different bonus.

Very tempted to get this. Not sure how long I will hold off...has it ever been on Steam sale, do you know? Thanks for your feedback!

Broke away for a drink and a snack, so checked in...

Yeah - I almost never grab the day of release for any title, but I did intend to get to it much earlier than I did. Several of the VNs in the queue ahead of it had issues with rewrites, Modders disappearing, bullshit associated with Steam releases, and I had to do a few full replays. Then, as I finished one, something in the queue would jump ahead - I sort my folders on the external by date, and get the one that had been updated the least recently, and if something with an older save date than Eternum released, then I got it. I have made a couple of exceptions - tried doing one, but it was royally fucked up due to a RenPy change, and I wasn't in the mood to completely start over at the time. Might get it next; and, while Chasing Sunsets was technically in line ahead of this, it was a "Sancho" mod VN that has some complexity to it, so I was waiting to see if he came back, then saw that there were some epilogues coming, so I moved that until the epilogue versions are released. Already had to do a full replay of all my paths on that after they did the RenPy change, and if I have to do them all again, I want to wait until full completion.

Definitely my top VN - it's one of my signature items someplace else. And, since redheads are a thing with you, please meet my goddess:

Balatro is still relatively new (a little over a year) and very popular. It hasn't really gotten a deep discount, but it has been going on sale pretty regularly for 20-30% off. Also if you didn't know, steam bundles let you "complete the bundle" if you already own some the items in the bundle. For example, since you have Slay the Spire in your steam account already, it would subtract the cost of Slay the Spire from the bundle. You still get the extra discount for the bundle, even if you're only buying one game in it.
