ASUS and MSI are by far the most popular and trustworthy. EVGA used to be up there, but they sadly stopped making cards a couple years back I think. At the end of the day though? Unless you're getting a genuine scam, the chip itself always comes from NVIDIA, so it really doesn't matter. Just go for the best price but don't get something that looks way too good to be true.

Personally, I am a strong advocate for buying used GPUs. They don't decrease in performance when used normally, so a 4 year old 3090 should work about the same as a brand new one, except you saved money by buying it second-hand.
Interesting, I've never consider this. Where would you typically buy a used GPU and if you were to buy one now, which would you recommend? I'm considering buying and building a new computer soon and I'd like to start dipping my toes into creating some AI renders and of course I want to it to be able to handle the current games such as Enshrouded and Void Crew. Thanks!

I don't like buying PC parts second hand.
You never know what has been done to them, and for how long it has been done to them.
At least that's how I see it. :p

Well, in 2014 it was true I guess. Now you need to worry if it was used to mine crypto and/or run 24/7 making AI art
Yeah very true. Usually if you get it from another seller that you meet in-person then you can tell if they were just a gamer or if they beat the shit out of their card on a crypto rig.

This depends on a lot of factors, but mainly budget (I'll be using US prices). If you want a new and shiny next-gen card and have $700+ to drop on a new GPU, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 or 9070XT both look very promising for their price/performance ratio. If you can find a used AMD Radeon 6700XT for ~$450, then that's a pretty nice deal. Both of these cards would easily run those games you mentioned at Ultra settings, 1080p, 60+ fps.

NVIDIA tends to be pricier even used, but you'll have better compatibility and AI stuff will be easier to do. A used 3080 or 4070 could be a nice find and would run the games you want and generate hi-res AI stuff in seconds. I'm most familiar with facebook marketplace for buying used stuff, but be wary of scammers. I wouldn't get anything used unless you can see it and verify it works in-person BEFORE giving up your money.

My PC is a few years old now, I'm running a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 which works fine for older games, but since it only has 4GB of VRAM, it can't handle those newer games. How would you verify it works in person before handing over cash? I try to be very cautious with buying used via FB Marketplace or Kijiji etc, but I've never bought used computer parts before.

Very understandable. It certainly is safer buying new, but those sweet sweet savings lure me in 😍

I have a AMD GPU. I am very happy with the game performance, but then I wanted to make AI, and it is problem after problem, incompatibilities and errors. It has 16 GB of VRAM!! So AMD is good for gaming, but for productivity is better NVIDIA. But of course, low VRAM, so...

Yeah, that card's gonna struggle a bit these days lol. You have some options to make sure it works, you can ask for them to benchmark the card, tell them ahead of time you want to test it and maybe they'll toss it in their rig to show you it works. Sometimes you won't be able to test though. The best tell is to just talk with the person for a bit and see if they seem legit. Ask what they played on it, why they're getting rid of it, etc. With the used market there isn't a 100% surefire way to know, and that's why it costs less money.

Welp, it's time. I'm off to bed.
Bye everyone, have a good rest of your day/night! 🌊👋
