I don't think that's accurate. I don't think that his father paid for anything after Elon got out of college. Yes, he had a free ride for his education. I don't think his father contributed anything to any of Elon's businesses. I think Elon supports his father at this point, because of the bad decisions made somewhere along the line.
SpaceX, a private company (as opposed to government), has launched more satellites than everybody else combined. In addition to that, they currently launch almost 90% of the total payload by weight. They design re-usable rockets so that the cost to launch is less than anybody else. They have successfully launched the largest rocket ever built, and landed the largest booster safely for re-use.
And the electric cars, solar panels, battery technology, etc. Most of these are because he's willing to try new things, instead of doing them the way everybody else does.
I admit, I might feel differently if his company didn't provide me great internet where I once had none.
