I heard the second season was better, but have yet to make myself watch

Don't. It is better, but mostly on the surface. The costumes are better, Fares Fares plays a good Ishmael (within the limits of the material) and Natasha O'Keeffe is a belivable Lanfear, but that's it.
Everything else... to give you a couple of examples on how bad the writing is:
Perrin's wife and his guilt over her death are never mentioned, even if that was at the core of the charachter motivation in the first season.
Rand has been banging Lanfear for four straight episodes, then while they are about to have a nice time toghether once more, Moirane cames out of the blue, cuts Lanfear throat and Rand barely bats an eye, leaving the woman he had been living and fucking with, bleeding on the floor.

What in the fuck is this? What wife dying? Rand having a relationship with Lanfear (other than thinking she is very pretty)? Lanfear being stabbed? What??? Do I actually have to watch this? It sounds like a trainwreck.
