i am on the fence in regards to difficulty options, i personally think they actively detract from a game's intended experience, but that's a whole other discussion

Oh, that's a discussion we can definitely have right now. The main issue with game difficulty that most people have is that the question of "How difficult you want your game to be" is presented to you explicitly, and before you know how difficult the game itself is. You have nothing to measure or compare against, other than past experience, and that's a shitty situation for those who don't have that past experience.

There are a lot of games that have implicit difficulty, or the one that you as a player can adjust on your own. For example, you can choose how much potions you carry with yourself into battle, whether or not to go for golden stars or other highly-hidden items that require special skill to achieve. Sometimes, games allow you to pick and choose which goals you want to achieve, by making more challenges that you're required to achieve (think stars in Super Mario 64 or strawberries in Celeste). Game Maker's Toolkit (GMTK) has created a couple of video-essays about this topic on YouTube, I'll link to one here:

This really is what the standards should become : flexibility. Always found stupid the difficulty choices in games like Uncharted or Call of Duty.
Especially with AAA games where they put absurd ton of money in thing players dont want ... If they used a tiny part of that waste into developping a flexible difficulty system, this would not ever be a topic !
There is so much more to do, but the simple example of Elden Ring, where most players never played Souls game because of how hard it is, but are now offered the opportunity to explore and go back to a fight that was hard, is a very nice design.
Easier than that, for 2D games like platformers, the game could automatically (with a setting to enable it or not) make ennemies slower when players fails a certain amount of time. Even for more casual gamers, it could enable the ability to have a "bigger" jump (or semi-assisted) after several fails ...
This way, the game has a basic and intended design, show players they can get better, but do not leave behind players that face a wall impossible to break, neither offer a base difficulty that makes a game trivial.


How more casual players actually enjoy this choice ? And the only difference between all is a damage and HP multiplier. This could so easily be adjusted. (have a setting -not by default ?- that prevent switching from a multiplier to another)
And the multipliers also could offer more difficulty levels : there is 6 here, but you could have close to infinite inbetween each.

True, I don't get this. What if I have a phobia of lizard (some monster in monhun)? Or phobia of bodyparts get chopped off (common mechanic in monhun)? Or godforbid phobia of monster? Now what? If you create a monster game but cut yourself short with spider type model because you don't want to trigger the arachnophobia people, then the other phobias will want it too, there's no end to it. I feel like this thing is part of "It is what it is", kinda like phasmophobia, you afraid of ghost? Well too bad, this game is about ghost

I am right there with you. We are in this weird place where developers and people in general have this need for everything to be safe and appealing for everyone, which leads to a lot of things getting watered down.
It's like the ability to look at something and go "that's cool, but it's not for me" got lost somewhere along the way and now the lack of that mindset is being catered to.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you two and push back a little bit. While I'm also not the one to be afraid of spiders, for those who need this kind of feature, it's definitely something that can make the game more accessible to them. And, the best part of this is that it's hidden away in the settings, and you can easily just not interact with this option at all. Or, even better, you can turn this on for the memes — especially if the mode is funny as hell, like in Lethal Company or Satisfactory. That, or you might do that for the benefit of the viewers if you're a streamer or content creator.

And lastly, it's not really productive to go "Why haven't they also included this kind of accessibility?" Best to raise that concern to the actual developer and contact them directly, especially if you would stand to directly benefit from it yourself.

Otherwise, I don't feel frustrated about the "things getting watered down for the sake of being appealing for everyone", especially here. As I said, it's an optional thing, and you can just ignore this being an option altogether, so saying anything other than "That's cool, but it's not for me" is just wrong. And, in line with that philosophy, you're also welcome to exercise that notion on games that are a little too "catering for everything to be safe and appeal to everyone" and find some experiences that don't include these kinds of accomodations. What you can't deny is that there is a set of people that clearly benefits from this kind of experience being present in gaming, they have clearly not been served basically anything even 10-15 years ago, and that those kinds of people also deserve the benefit of being able to participate in video games.

- It's an option that is turned off by default, nothing is getting watered down and you don't lose anything with it.
- It affects a very small portion of an otherwise "fun" game some people would've otherwise had a hard (hehehe) time enjoying.
- Stop crying about included accessibility options because they don't affect you.
- If there are accessibility options that you need, don't hesitate to bring them up with developers. There's a lot of stories about games including them because people reached out. Color blindness, deafness, controller and customization support for people with missing hand(s).
