Is this similar to the debate in the UK as to the correct way to pronounce the word scone. Some think its pronounced scone (to rhyme with gone) whilst others think it should be scone (to rhyme with hone).

That's one good thing about accentuation. If it was scóne and scône or something like that it would be easir to know the correct pronunciation. (But even in languages that uses accentuation there are lots of words that don't, for some reason, and some words that are written the same and pronnounced differently )
