I've tried using trucks but the system for automating them just makes me frustrated. Way easier to use lines of stacked conveyors or a train.

The main advantage of fixed fines is that they don't require any analysis of the person's income. If you want a scaled fine you have to have the person swear to how much money they make and probably provide written proof. It's more work for everyone. I think things like points on driving license, community service and other alternative punishments to fines/prison are generally better if the crime doesn't merit imprisonment.

But the shitty thing is that if you do X you either are put in jail for Y time or pay a Z amount.
That way the poor people are always the one being imprisoned, while the rich don't mind paying and sometimes even do it again because they don't care.
Here sometime ago the son of a rich businessman killed two people by running over them with his car at the same block, but years apart one from the other, and both times he just paid a hefty fee and that was it.

I agree. I guess I didn't know what to expect, so I wasn't let down. I did think there was a bit too much open nothing, but I'd played No Mans Sky already so I was used to it. I do want to see what the expansion does for the overall enjoyment.

Yeah, life's really unfair.
I think drunk hit and run is ruled as homicide at first, but with good lawyers and connections they can overturn it and make it so its ruled as a accidental death, so only a fine is enough.

That's why I'm saying community service works better than fines. If someone has to do 64 hours of community service, that's 8 8 hour days regardless of your income. The manslaughter cases are weirder though, I'm pretty sure manslaughter is a jail sentence everywhere in the States, although it can be pretty short like < a year if there's no aggravating factors. Manslaughter with a vehicle can be an aggravating factor, and might also come with mandatory license suspension. That requires the person is actually convicted of manslaughter though, prosecutors love to offload cases by getting pleas so you get some pretty egregious plea deals.

I don't know anything about Brazilian criminal justice but that sounds like someone pleading murder down to reckless homicide, i.e. manslaughter. Which to be fair would be correct for drunk driving since the driver doesn't intend to kill anyone. The surprising part would be that DUI manslaughter wouldn't have mandatory probation at least, in the US DUI manslaughter would be one of the aggravated sentences I mentioned where you're looking at possibly a decade prison sentence.

People could argue that the time of a poor man that have to work to put food on his family table is more "important" to him than of someone who have passive income, but it would be already a lor better.

Hey guys just popping in to say hi Things are a bit shitty here at the moment plus I am trying to get the bedroom ready for the newborns when they arrive next year they are due to have a scan later next month to see what sex we are having. I'm hoping for a couple of sons this time to help balance out all the females

Yeah but you can do community service on the weekends or whatever days you aren't working. And if you have someone with a really weird work schedule they can work that out with the judge and prosecutor, like if they work on a fishing boat and are going to be gone during certain months they can tell the court when they'll be in town. Even with e.g. Europe's day-fine system, someone with stable finances and savings is less impacted by having to pay one day worth of pay in fines than a person living paycheck to paycheck.

Another advantage to community service is that judges can waive part of it in exchange for the person doing something to be less likely to reoffend in the future. That could be classes on anger management or I've even seen judges offer to completely waive community service if someone gets their GED (basic school completion diploma for adults) so that they will hopefully be able to turn their life around and get a job.
