Back before AI Dungeon went on its censorship spree, I generated a story there using one of their presets. It was supposed to be a story in which the user would be a ranger who would go on adventures to fight goblins and orcs and demons and so forth, you know, the 'evil' races of D&D.

Instead, I had my ranger adopt a goblin girl as his daughter after some humans killed her parents. My ranger raised her and defended her against the humans and eventually gathered an army of orcs, goblins, demons, and other races who united together to overthrow the racist human king who was genocidally trying to wipe out the orcs/goblins/demons and justifying it by claiming that they were evil.

I can't remember what happened to the king, but I think he and his paladins might have been executed after being tried for war crimes or something and then I think a demon woman got democratically elected president of the realm. My ranger married her and had lots of sex resulting in many demon/human hybrid babies.

It was very entertaining to subvert the will of the AI and force it to have the story go in directions it clearly wasn't designed for. The story was much more fun to read that way!

So, to answer your question, no, goblins need not be the bad guys. Not if you're creative and don't want them to be!
