I first read the books in the mid-late 80s and only reread about a month ago. It's all still pretty fresh, but only the most glaring of variances stood out when the movies (both series) came out. While I'm still a fan of the movies, I'm really disappointed by some of the changes Jackson made to the relationships and interactions between characters solely to create conflict and extra "drama". There's plenty of drama in the books and it would have been cool to see the trees at Helm's Deep instead of the Elves (who weren't there in the books).

It was some time between 2004 and 2008 I read it. I know I was working in the building they moved into in 2004 and the place shut down in 2008.
