Well, few reasons. Firstly, it dumbs down narrative. I am more inclined to believe someone is serious when he says "I'm sad" than when he says the same thing but with sad emoticon. Emoticon doesn't bring anything of value to the dialogue. Secondly, spamming. Several of the same emoticon in a row or just spam of emoticons without any text is just annoying. Thirdly, misusing them. How many times it happens when you have different opinion than someone else and he types "you are retarded, kill yourself" and then smiling or laughing emoticon? It doesn't make any sense and I immediately view person like this as 14yo max.

I think I never found myself in situation when emoticon brought something of value to conversation. At best, they just didn't change anything. That's my opinion on it, I have no problem if someone disagrees, if you think talking with emoticons is easier, then good for you.

Problem isn't favoritism or anything like that. It's that mods give warning but don't follow with sanctions when the violation of the rules continue. I stop answering after severedrealms warning. Some of the other continue and there weren't any sanctions. So it encourages them to keep trolling, flaming and promoting hate speech.
