Best answer I can find, and I'm inclined to believe it as I can't fathom usb being sufficient:


No matter what your laptop spec is, the straight answer to eGPU is basically... NO.
While eGPU connected via custom PCI-E interface is kind of acceptable, thunderbotl connected eGPU is simply a no-go.
A few reasons:

1. you spend extra few hundred on a dock that cost quite a lot and it is just as big as a ITX desktop.
2. ThunderBolt is painfully unstable for connecting a GPU... its bandwidth is not quite enough. This means whenever you play high-FPS or CPU-demanding games, you will have stutter like crazy. Very bad experience.
3. If your current one is overheating like hell... your laptop CPU is very likely to still overheat even after you use the eGPU instead of that MX450 (come on, MX450 is like very low-power, having it at idle won't help that much.)

So you just consider a new laptop, or perhaps a proper desktop. Based on my experience with eGPU, the user experience is constantly annoying and you are very likely to regert.

USB-C has about half the bandwidth a good GPU will need. USB4 can be up to 40GB/s and would be sufficient. At least in theory. USB4 2.0 can manage 80GB/s and would be faster than PCIe in theory.

I wouldn't try it though, even if it has the bandwidth I would worry about the latency. You're not going to get lower latency than being on the bus inches from the CPU and RAM. For graphics even a millisecond is a long time.

you can by a usb to m.2 adapter to clone your current drive and then swap, they are relativly cheap
