Thanks to everyone for the replies.
I was thinking about scrapping my current work and starting again but after reading the replies I'm going to continue with it for a little longer and see how it turns out, even if it just ends up being for the experience and learning curve.

I agree with everyone who has said both, and in the end it's your game really, don't artificially force in story or sex as it will always be evident and feel unnatural.
I'd like to offer my own slightly different perspective, I usually skip the story and dialogue, I like enough for me to be immersed into the game's world and characters but aside from that don't really care. What matters to me more is how engaging and fun the gameplay is. One game I thought handled sex and story perfectly was Succubus Academia as sex was integrated naturally in the game itself, and Girl Life was quite fun to play too. Of course for VNs or HTML type games this might be different lol but I hope you understand what I mean.
Keep persevering with your vision and carve out a game you would enjoy.

Another question I have is once you, as the MC, have had sex with a character are you still interested in having further sexual interactions with that character? or is it all about the first time?

I often write erotic stories through Novel AI. Almost every time I start a story there I think that this time I will want to actually stay with the girl my character has sex with, at least until she actually gives birth to their baby, and probably longer than that.

In actual fact though, I lose interest in the girl almost immediately after my character deflowers her. In the thousands of stories I've generated through Novel AI that follow that similar premise, I think maybe only in one or two of them did my character remain in a monogamous relationship with a girl for more than a day or two after he popped her cherry. In a few dozen he stayed in a relationship with a girl after taking her virginity, but only if she helped him meet other girls that they could have threesomes with.

There were a few stories in which technology was used so that the girl gave birth within a few seconds of being impregnated, but other than that I don't think my character ever remained in any kind of relationship with a girl he had impregnated long enough for her to give birth.

The stories simply became boring after the initial defloration took place and couldn't keep my interest.

So, to answer your question, it depends on the situation but generally no, as much as I would like to be, I don't often retain interest in game-girls after my character initially has sex with them.

Both. No sex, it's boring as fuck. Without a story, might as well just watch porn.

Both. I like the path to the goal with a good story. Teasing, Groping, Peeking and so on.

Story, sex can be good, but without the story, it turns into just a simple porn.

Both. Good stories drive a long-lasting gameplay-ability, good sex provides a nice escalation to things.

I know, the obvious answer is both..

Hi guys,
First post, long time on/off lurker.
I've been messing with Daz and Renpy for a while now and decided to try making my own VN.
It was going ok, learning a lot but my first attempt quickly turned into a fuck-fest with almost every scene ending up with the MC
having sex, which is fine but the story was minimal at best, made little sense and was all over the place...Ok, lesson learned, start over.

Now I've come up with a decent story, but there isn't a lot of sex scenes during the first few days as I try to establish the characters and move the story along at a decent pace. So I've gone from one extreme to the other...which brings me to my question..

Which is more important? A decent story or lot's of sex?
Another question I have is once you, as the MC, have had sex with a character are you still interested in having further sexual interactions with that character? or is it all about the first time?

I get that everyone will have their own preferences, just curious what the majority thinks.

Definitely both. One has no meaning without the other.

Getting the balance right is the challenge but I guess that comes with experience.
I'm on the start of day 6, it takes around 90 mins to play through to this point, there's 4 sex scenes and 2 or 3 scenes that are not full-on sex but sexual.

I like to get to know my love interests before getting to the sex, so a few days of character development isn't a bad thing to me. One thing you could try if you want to insert some spicy scenes in the early game is a dream/fantasy scene, I've seen this used in quite a few games and IMO it works pretty well.

I hate that "just a dream" shit.

I’m having the same issue, I’m trying to write a story but it feels like every other scene leads to a sexual scene.

I'm no expert in VNs or anything but here's what i think that may be useful to you and OP: Visual novels often attract the type of players that want a good immersive story, so lack of sex scenes earlier on should not be a problem at all, however i think it's beneficial to have some teasing moments (even to showcase the art if that's gonna be a strong point of the game).

There's not only dialogue and character-buliding and then sex scenes. I think teasing scenes and moments are very underrated and also very important for building up to the sex scenes.

80% Story 20% sex

I love when the relationships and sex are building up. They are more exciting.

That's a good thing. There are way too many that have acres of text before and between sex scenes.

I like themes of MC seducing a somewhat reluctant love interest. Story/dialogue makes those scenes so much hotter than just the images alone could ever do.

story is the foundation..without it, the sex is rubish.. but AVN needs both

As everybody say the best is a good balance between both. But if something has to be sacrificed for me it would be story, because even if a story is nice, if the sex scenes are lacking, there is no really that much of a reason to play the game, since at the end they are porn games.
