I have played several and its biggest problem is becoming repetitive even to the point of exhaustion, this type of game must have a lot of content and ramifications so as not to quickly enter a meaningless loop.

I feel like they're unneeded. I'm not familiar with the coding enough to comment as to whether or not it's easier to make a game sandbox or not.
But if it's harder to make them sandbox? Then it's a waste of time. I haven't found that it can add the immersion that it's attempting to... Maybe in the future when the tech advances
