How much do you care about your family?

Now that's a touchy subject as half my family is dead already, and the other half I haven't seen for over 25 years.

Only one I care about today is my aging mother I take care of because the others don't give a damn.

I have a lot of family. The close ones, parents and siblings, I love and like being around. But, I live alone for a reason.

The extended family... I don't mind most of them. But, "out of sight, out of mind" applies to both sides there.

I do love my family, but I don't think family is that special and more important than other relationships.
If any family member were a dick to me, I'd be a dick to them, I don't care to that "family have to stay together" bullshit.

To answer my own question, i/we give a fuck about our family. Our goal was always to get rid of them and live our lifes how WE wanted, so we left them behind and never talked to any of the oldimers again. We only stayed in contact with lil sis and lil sis only with us. The whole concept about a loving family is pure theory for any of us since they only wanted to use us for their own sick goals.
So only siblings matter for any of us.

Both my and my wife's parents are deceased, family to me is my wife, our daughter and my spouse's sister. These are the closest and dearest people to me. I have nothing more dear to me.

That's not totally unconditional obviously, no one should feel compelled to accept abuse or actual mistreatment because "he/she's family".

I'm glad you said this. I've seen countless cases of relatives that were outright criminal, like raped someone in the family, and people would say "He should be forgiven", "Family you only have one", "You must remain together" or any other shit like this, and it gets me mad.
I do like my family, I do think it's good to be close to them, but if someone do something bad for other person, they shouldn't have a place there anymore.

I'm glad you said this. I've seen countless cases of relatives that were outright criminal, like raped someone in the family, and people would say "He should be forgiven", "Family you only have one", "You must remain together" or any other shit like this, and it gets me mad.
I do like my family, I do think it's good to be close to them, but if someone do something bad for other person, they shouldn't have a place there anymore.

See, people like that are looking at it from the wrong angle. Their family was attacked and betrayed, and they're circling the wagons around the attacker? Uncle Handsy rapes a niece, he should be dangling from a tree at the next reunion.

I'm semi-close to most of my immediate family. My siblings and I are all adults, live in different places and have our own lives (and they have spouses and children) but we keep in touch and love each other. I was pretty close to my mom, but she's dead now. My dad, not so much (our views on religion and politics are extremely different, plus he wasn't much of a dad anyway). My friends are as close to me as family, as well; their kids call me Uncle.

My own family is important. My grandparents too. But my parents and my brother... erm no. After my parents got divorced (my mother had a lover), my father quits his well payed job as a mechanican and take a bad paid one to prevent paying alimony. And every 2 weeks, when we met him, he always said: "dAdDy iS sOo pOoR, wE jUsT cAn gO tO tHe pArk... iCecreAm? dAddy is pOor..." So this was over really fast. Just some phone calls at birthdays and xmas. Until today. But today it's Whatsapp messages. My mother loves my brother more than me. I was more like "ballast". So I was mainly at my grandparents or at my best friends home. His parents called me often "their third child". They were more parents for me than my own. If I ever lose my home and come to my mother, she would likely drive me to the next homeless shelter instead giving me the guest room in her house. My brother just calls when he want something or to sell me something used for the "factory price", because it's "totally unused" and he "cannot give it away for less just because we are brothers". As I asked him to drive me to the hospital, because my girlfriend had an accident, he asked for gas money. If he was poor, I would understand, but he isn't and wasn't. I took a taxi instead. A typical asshole.

Long story short: My own family is important, my grandparents have my loyality. My parents and my brother can f#*k themselves.

Let me squize some opinion.
You can't get a definite answer for such a question.
Any family member may be a good human or a bad one to you, or to all society (and this judgement also subjective).
All depends on actual people and their life experience.
In general you can say that a family is still a major thing today.
A good atmosphere in family makes it good to grow a kind human and wise versa.
As to me - i don't really want to communicate often with my family (not that i dislike them).
For me it is enough to know that they are good and healthy.
But if some bullet starts to fly to them, i would get in the way i guess.

My family was never really supportive of me and my sibling is just a brat. I don't really care too much for them, but I will help them out occasionally.

I feel like most of my extended family doesn't really care about me, so then why should I care about them....... but if I see a chance to help a struggling family member, I feel like I have a moral responsibility to do what I can.

When your growing up you think it's 1v1 you vs someone in your family when you fight with them but when your grown up you realize it's actually you and your family vs the world.
