Well the blame would have to be on the Japanese. As Hentai games and videos were my first glimpse of this genre.

Sadly western Adult VNs weren't that popular twenty years ago.

I think I first dabbled with something like Leasure Suit Larry that I found installed on an old PC of my uncle, but the first thing I consciously played (and downloaded) was one of the darker (=cooler looking) games from the old translated VNs like Dividead or Bible Black.

Personally mine was a japanese AVN called princess waltz I think. It was a great intro but I didn't believe western audiences knew much about AVNs.
It wasn't until I stumbled upon Summertime Saga that I knew about western developed AVN's with patreon and the likes.
I think my first 3d renpy was Man of the House. Curious what you guys experienced as a first AVN and what got you guys to keep coming back to it.

Katawa Shuojo as well which led me to attempt some Japanese games that never really ended up catching my interest. Then a long break and DMD -> Summertime Saga and untold more.
