These questions always go off track so quickly, it's not which actor you like best. I have always thought it meant if you served on a starship which captain would you rather serve with? So my answer is Picard as I feel I would learn more and become a better Starfleet officer, not to say Kirk was bad or even "lesser" in any way he was just a different type of Captain.

Sisko had the rank of a Captain but was more of an Admiral tip. Picard was a Diplomat/idealist.

They were both great captains. Achieved a lot in their time. However I prefer Picard's style more, as he would think and reason his way thru situations. Kirk's style was more 'If you can't fuck it, beat the shit out of it' And i prefer the more intelligent methods

Kirk has an unorthodox charismatic
leadership style based on gut instincts and spur of the moment action's.
Picard is just a boring old fart obsessed with following procedures and intellectual indulgences.
Serving on kirks ship would be a real roller coaster mix of adventure and peril, and you know when shore leave comes around those guys party hard.
Life on picards ship would be unbearable with the tyrant old fucker obsessed with petty proceedures micro managing every aspect of your life,constantly having to look over your shoulder cos the ship is full of arselickers like Laforge and Data snitching on you.you won't even be able to perve on deanna troi cos she'd read your mind and get "offended"
By your lecherous thoughts and snitch on you to the vice captain whos she banging.

Both pretty unique and therefor hard to compare.
Kirk is more the easy going womanizer and spontanous.
Picard is more the serious tactican, reserved because he already lost enough in his past.
So...if i had to choose which captain i would server the answer would be without a single doubt picard.
But if i had to choose which captain i would join in a bar to hear some stories it would be without a doubt kirk.
Its really not easy...but all of kirks humor cant beat picard with lwaxana in the same room.

Never Captain of the Enterprise. Only in alternate timeline and when Picard was Locutus. There was Rachel Garett Captain of the Enterprise C killed in Yesterday's Enterprise, and of course Harriman who was the idiot Captain who got Kirk killed on the Ent B maiden voyage. Left spacedock without a tractor beam, without photon torpedoes. Engines weren't even tested at warp power. Had no ships Nurse, Doctor or Engineer.
