City of God (2002), Brilliant film about life in the slums of Rio, Brazil.
They Live (1988), because "I'm Here to kick ass and chew bubblegum", and for the longest fight scene ever .

Rowdy Roddy Piper was brilliant, he did a good job usually wrestlers make awful actors.

Not my favorite, but an important one to see is the doc Paradise Lost. Frightening look at how easily one could be railroaded and have your life taken away.
