I'm a professional 2D artist and am considering learning Ren'Py to make games. I'm really sick of working freelance on other peoples' projects and getting nowhere looking for a full time job, so its either this or give up on art 😂

Only question is if I want to go full 2D, or use 3D assets for more content and just use my design experience and 2D skills to supplement. Of course first I have to learn Ren'Py, but I'm pretty confident I can do that even if its a bit difficult.

well if you could do 3D that's definitely better ;)

I definitely wouldn't say that overall. Sure its faster, but you're way more limited if you're talking about using premade assets. I could literally make whatever I want in 2D. I could also model some of my own assets, but its not really much faster at that point.

'Deathable' is one of my all time favorite games; I adore the art and it's 2d so if you have a style that works for you wonderful if you change over to 3d that's awesome too. I don't know this for certain but i'd say 3d is more popular unless you have a certain well known style of your own, like Tekuho did with their game, Driven Affairs. I also don't know if you've already done this but maybe put some of your 2d art out there and see how people respond to help with that decision?

what I meant is better visually. At least I prefer 3D games to 2D.

Tbh, I'd probably rather just make something I like and hope other people like it as well. In my experience that's the best way to make things that are actually good.

Yeah, we're just gonna have to disagree on that one. Sometimes 3D is better, sometimes definitely worse. It all depends on how good the person making the thing is.

imo that'd be the best way to do it; good luck!

It looks like there are enough artists, coders, and writers in this thread to get a couple games made. You guys should think about grouping together.

Make some games for me to play!

ofc that's why I said "if you could do 3D". Meaning if you could do 3D at the same level of quality as 2D, then 3D should be better option to make game in. That's all. But do whatever you feel good doing, that's most important in the long run ;)

I'm already taken

Sure, but I also just meant that sometimes 2D art to me looks better than any 3D art. Just a matter of preference like you mentioned.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I study a bit of everything, I’ve studied Unreal and Unity and made some small test games. Currently, I develop software in Python and I’m already familiar with how RenPy works. I believe I have very interesting writing skills (I write short stories and have some books being written), but I’m terrible at 2D or 3D art. I thought I could do something interesting, but the knowledge of animation and rendering are miles away from the time I currently have available to study this.

Add to this that my native language is not English, then you find me, an almost game developer, a little frustrated haha.

I just came here to have a good time, than they closed isle 5 and now I'm reading guides and watching tutorials.

and get berated by your fans day in day out? hell now... I'd rather not be on the receiving end of that. thank you

It all depends how far you want to take it. Basic stuff in RenPy even in DAZ is not that hard to do. But if you want something more, It gets way more complicated pretty fast :)
I believe this ^^ to be very true.

I've played many a vn, where I've thought, I can write better than this, or I could do better renders. So I tried and found it to be true, but it also quickly became so much more work than I dreamed and I was expecting it to pretty tough to start.

Fortunately there are plenty of resources, tutorials and communities out there that almost anyone can learn it all if they are willing to put in the time.

If you have a vision on what you want to develop, then you either need to practice a lot of skills (or have those skills already) or make a development team to cover where you lack. Bad art can be handled by an artist. Bad coding can be handled by a coder. Bad writing can be handled by a writer.

If you just want to make something to develop skills then make a super simple game as a proof of concept and go for it. You can expand on that by thinking 'how do I do this better' and making it happen the next time you go through the process.

Personally I know I don't have the round skillset to be a solo game developer, but would probably be a good support player in a dev team on a game. I've done similar things on other development projects, but not on games.

I've made a few free games already. All were bad. Will I continue to make games? Probably not.

I'm kind of at the point where I no longer found myself improving and that made it less fun to make the games. I'd need to put a lot more focus into game development to improve and I just don't have that kind of time.

Im already a dev so im interested in it, but I dont have any skills or interest in learning DAZ or other 3D Programs, AI or real porn based could be a way to try.

I should also say that the developer community is, as a whole, very helpful and encouraging of each other. There are some who are asshole, but mostly everyone is friendly and willing to help you learn.
I have an idea for a game and I wanted to start with Ren'py 8.* . Most Tutorials and Docs (besides the official docs) are outdated with older version, so their insight for me are somewhat limited. Luckily the porn VN community appears to be the most active one out there so I found a lot of useful stuff here and there is even a dude on YT who used to make naughty VNs who has a Ren'py 8 game tutorial from scratch.

As for my game idea I want to have the technical structure ready with a working gameplay loop (since I want it to be a sandbox/trainer game in a scifi setting). Once that is done I will focus more and more on DAZ to create Characters that fill this technical construct.
