I found that deleting the save.data folder and then starting the game removes the error message pop up as well.

So downloaded it. only issue is it shows a renpy file structure, but the .exe is a setup. never had to instal a renpy game before. is it possibly tempered with?

Mega seems to work fine, but nvm that. You are right to be suspicious because this is not a Ren'Py game, you most likely downloaded malware from a malicious ad. If you did run that .exe, it's time to do some damage control
