I am curious to see what people think about the choice of a game developer for an engine. Is there an engine, that when you see it's used, no matter how good the art looks, you are reluctant or outright ignore the game because of it?
For me, its RPGM. I have played some good games made in this engine, but most of the times, it's a buggy mess, clunky or just feels that the "rpg mechanics" offer nothing but an annoyance. So, most of the time, I just ignore games made in RPGM

I tend to avoid RPGM games as well. The engine itself is fine for what it does; the problem is so many devs severely misuse it, either because they're making a VN and don't get that RPGM is the wrong tool, or because they're making an RPG and just really suck at it because it's way more complex than a VN.

That said, I do sometimes pick up an RPGM game.

I'm a little leery about Unity games- the engine's fine, but it's both overpowered and underspecialized for VNs, which means a lot of games made with it wind up clunky and unwieldy and inconvenient in a way Renpy games rarely are.

There's a couple more VN-focused engines out there that look to me like they're just attempts to copy Renpy. I may play a game in them, but it's relucantly.

Then there's stuff like RAGS and QSP that I just don't touch with a 10 foot pole.

As a dev, there is no game engine I hate. (Except unity cuz fuck unity that's why). I hate the implementation of it.
For example RPGM. In a lot of cases, people just don't use RPGM properly or fully.
RPGM is built for RPG Mechanics, and it does enforce them, so if you don't need strict RPG mechanics then you shouldn't use it.

I agree with you there.

I get what you mean, but it's because of the poor implementation that I hate RPGM. Now, I am not gonna hate on Corpse Party or the Crooked Man, but in the context of porn games, yeah I hate it

I'm not a fan of the rpg maker for adult games. Nor am I a fan of the anime style (I don't know what the engine is called).

RPGM and Unity both drive me crazy, there are a couple of games that I play with those but for the most part if it isn't Ren'py I won't play

For VN, I hate all except Ren'py. I can't stand to face a bug or getting stuck. With Ren'py, I can always fix an issue or check the code to see why I can't progress. Edit: ... and I can tweak the ages of the characters.

In games without movement controls and fighting systems i want mouse only controls.
So rpgm without mouse support is nothing but trash.

RPGM - because of the extremely uncomfortable controls. Unreal - as a rule, amateur games on this engine are extremely poorly optimized and consume too many resources. And even on high-end desktops. The blame for this lies on the crooked developers.

Not sure what you mean by an anime-style game engine. You might be thinking of a particular rendering program, e.g. Koikatsu or Honey Select.

And even if you do need strict RPG mechanics you need to think carefully about how to make that game fun for your players. Played too many RPGM games where a lot of things were well done but the game was a chore because the dev didn't think through things like "if the player picks up this quest six screens away from his in-game house and the quest has six stages and he has to do something at his house to trigger each next stage, how much total time is he going to spend holding the 'run' button while watching the map roll by?"

I'm not that picky. I enjoy taking a look at what people have cooked up, even if it's a buggy mess sometimes.

I gotta admit though, that the times I've tried to get a RAGS game working it's been pretty tough. So I guess, I have less faith in a RAGS game working properly than most other engines.

Same as OP, RPGM is almost always a pass for me, I have played games using that engine where all the RPG map movement element were removed and those were playable, but Ren'Py is by far the superior platform for that style game. I'm also starting to dislike Unity games; I play in window mode and Unity rarely (if ever) allows me to size the window to what I want.

You are right. Game dev don't think much about these things. So even if you do have to run to the locations, the dev could reward the players by giving small rewards for going to locations like this. Or you could just create a teleportation mechanic to fix this.
