FF14 is incredible, you can play any classes with the same character, the community is very welcoming so it is easy to progress.
You have a lot to explore, the story is captivating and even the secondary quest are important :)

Guild Wars 2 to relax, just run around and make money to buy outfits.

ive been playing runescape on and off since 4th grade. still play OSRS

It's been a minute, but Star Trek Online. An MMO being based in a property you love is neat and all (Old Republic, Dune: Awakening) but STO had, for me, genuinely enjoyable combat gameplay. I LOVED shipbuilding and theorycrafting. If I had ever really tried it when I was younger I would have probably become life-ruiningly obsessed with EVE.

MechWarrior online gets an honorable mention. Not an MMO, but preparing multiple mech loadouts and swapping between them in different matches after blowing up made it feel like it was.

Anyone have good mobile suggestions though?

Diablo Immortal - Too little social aspect.
Genshin - Too Gatcha.
Eve Echoes - Not really my thing.
BDO Mobile - Too hyper-pumped in levelling. No sense of progression.
Albion Online - Too cartoony-etc.

Everquest was the GOAT for me. I also loved playing Maplestory 1 and 2. I have yet to find a MMO that has me hooked. Sorry forgot the why. EQ for me was the last bastion of games that didnt hold your hand and punished you harshly so in a way that you're thinking about what you are doing and not becoming Leroy Jenkins.

Everquest was my first, played that for years and made some great friends. I quit when corpse recovery interfered with making it to work on time. I've dabbled in many since then, but none as seriously as EQ.

I still dream about that EverQuest 3 game that was coming out before it was cancelled. It looked like EQ+Minecraft. I went back to that game so many times.
Have you tried Erenshor? It's based on EverQuest, but it's a solo RPG, and feels JUST LIKE IT. It's crazy fun.

Every single solitary MMO, I was dragged there kicking and screaming by IRL friends. I never M... MO... but played where they played.
If it was group, it was group. If it was raid, it was raid.
EXCEPT

City of Heroes. They left because it was EZMode and that's the only one that I could solo the "solo" missions... which is also why it failed. "Why solo in an MMO?" type of thing.
"I dunno. My friends dragged me. Ask them." But City was just at "my" level to keep playing. Loved the Character generation (for 2004, it was great). It was cancelled, though.
And to this day, I play a mission or 3 a day on an actual licensed pirate server (!). Yeah, NCSoft said: As long as you don't make actual profits, here's a license.

But if you like challenges and HAVING to group/raid, barring about 5-10% of City of Heroes content: it's a solo / play with friends game. Avoid if you're hardcore.
My little loli mastermind with robot minions was so great (I named them Snap, Crackle and Pop)! I had this guy drooling over me and my character was 12 and LOOKED 12. It was so funny. I loved that game. I've been meaning to try out the pirate server.

Well WoW basically carried my childhood and I still play it from time to time. On private servers though. I also liked swtor and eso but I don't have the motivation to invest into the grind anymore

Same here. I played the Beta and come back for most expansions to play.

Wow is the goat, I really love the concept of MMOs but the things that are fun for me in a MMO is exploration and trying out different builds and creating tactics as a team and most people that play just want quick results, so they google builds, strats and metas and find it frustrating to deviate from that so I've had a hard time finding a fun community to play with. At least the way I would like to play. And I mean.. I get it, I rather bang my head bloody against a wall than walk around it and most people just aren't like that. So I'll just play games like dark souls to scratch that itch even though it would have been fun to do it as a group.
