The ones that pick up my interest enough to try a new game are horror or paranormal. They are so hard to do that it seems like if someone goes there to tell a story they actually have something cooked.

Sandbox

99% of the devs do not have any real concept of how to properly balance the "sandbox" aspect. Invariably you end up with either too much grind that kills immersion or the events are not in the correct order. You end up doing things that overlap, etc. I refuse to play these games anymore. I only have one game of that type in my library that is sandbox and it is because that dev actually knows what he/she is doing.

good english description make me play game it good so good oh yeahhhh baby ohohoho

No matter how much I might like the preview pix, a tag of sandbox is an automatic hard no for me. I have never enjoyed a sandbox game, no matter how well done, so I eventually just gave up.

sandbox can be fun in small bursts. but i hate full sandbox games. it wastes too much time. i only play visual novels.

It really needs to be a very good sandbox for me to be able to stay connected to the story and not just drop it... Well I almost always drop it at some point.

Agreed. It's just such a hard balance to get right. How much grinding/exploration is fun vs tedious. Sometimes it's nice to work for it, touches that predatory/hunting instinct, makes the payoff better.

Haven't seemed to be able to get into HTML games yet. Tried degrees of lewdity but couldn't find myself enjoy it as much as ren'py or even RPGM.

I'm just not a fan of NTR. I can get sleeping with another guy's wife or whatever, but I see no appeal to my own wife cheating on me.

For me an HTML game is more of "I'm having coffee and scrolling my feed" vibes.

For me this depends on how the game handles it. If it's a female MC, I don't care. If it's a male MC, it depends on how much mental work I have to do rewriting the dialogue/scenario/vibe to make it consensual/sharing/control or adopting a more 3rd person perspective. If a game leans more into shaming/jealousy/insecurity, I just kinda check out, it fails to land. Kinda disappointing since it's usually the story of a girl exploring/corrupting her sexuality, and I very much enjoy that if done well.

I was speaking from the male perspective. If I'm playing as the girl, then I'm kinda ok with cheating and all that because I'm into corruption.

For me it's a few tags, Kinetic Novels are instant turn off. I want at least some gameplay or decisions, otherwise I'd read an actual novel or comic.
NTR, same as the guy above, I don't see the value in getting cheated on.
AI is not an instant turn off, but I don't like the art style from AI in games, so in 99% it's goodbye from me.
Real Porn, usually the pictures are not a good match and I hate that, so avoid.
Pee/Scat, unless avoidable it's a no from me.

Male MC, Incest and Pregnancy will get me to try a game/vn any day.

A man of true sophistication and culture.

Yeah, I'm behind you on that. But it's fun when you see yourself from the perspective of the taker. Most people that enjoy it are not interested in all that settling down and building trust. Those that hate it want the classic traditional path of loving family built on trust and loyalty. It's a tag but a mirror of the self too.

I think it's more about control. Being the taker has an aspect of control. Being in a loyal/settled relationship built on wholesome trust has an aspect of control. Choosing to share a partner has an aspect of control. Being cheated on, that control evaporates completely, even if the game isn't leaning into shame/humiliation/insecurity.

I'd have to disagree on the last part about being cheated on and losing control. At least personally, I see it more as a betrayal of trust, not a loss of control.

I suppose I mean control in terms of consistency, reliability, predictability, safety. You work to establish trust, that work gives you some level of control over the relationship, even if mutual. I see betrayal of trust as a partner removing/denying that control, that expectation.

I can't do monsters or futa. When they are too sci-fi or too high fantasy can't do it either.

Sandbox games are sometimes easy and sometimes difficult because they even offer free-roaming without a guide and it really burns through your data.
