I have played some great games that had just decent graphics. Well written story and characters can make a game great. That's not to say graphics can be just fuck all bad. I think if a creator does their best with what they have and are open to advice and constructive criticism they can still make a great game.

Getting the skills to create high quality renders like SSP takes a long time, and building a rig capable of rendering them in a reasonable amount of time takes several thousand dollars. As nice as it is to get beautiful images in your AVNs, quality writing and/or solid gameplay can really elevate mediocre graphics. Heck, one of my favorite games, Strive For Power, is almost entirely text-based, and some other favorites of mine are made with Honey Select (Eternum, the Headmaster, etc).

Nice graphics are nice, but not necessary.

I'm actually on the side of story over graphics, myself. Both are important, but if the story isn't there it just doesn't hold my interest at which point the graphics serve no purpose.

Nice graphics gets the initial downloads, but if the translation is bad or its just poorly written in general then people aren't going to be coming back for the updates. Thats how it is for me at least.
