Sandbox is only good if it's really an open world thing. If it's having to find the right place to go, especially when there's time and it has to be at a specific time, it sucks ass.

I prefer sandbox because it gives me something to do. If I want to read, I read a book. If I want to watch porn, I prefer watching real people. With few exceptions, VNs tend to get boring.

VNs can (and usually do) have choices. Kinetic Novels are the non-games you're thinking of.

Sandboxes have the ability to go further than any VN can, but in reality it takes significantly more effort from a developer to get it to a high standard. This is why most people just make VNs. Hopefully we see more great sandbox games with great mechanics, as we get more developers.

VN. Sandbox is unnecessary even if not grindy. Grindy Sandboxes are trash.
