The dev was pretty open early on that they weren't happy with the quality of their models on some of the characters, the quality of the writing, and especially the quality of the coding, as they didn't have any experience going into the start of making the game, and by the time they had learned quite a bit more, they found themselves having a very hard time continuing with older work (especially the coding, which was starting to cause compounding issues, apparently).
So they made the decision to start over, allowing them to use their new knowledge to make models they were happier with, improve the coding, and expand/change up the story a bit to be more cohesive rather than a jumbled mess with no real direction like they seemed to have been heading with the previous version.
I get people being upset about the remake, especially given the length of time it's taking to get back to seeing any real content. And I can get people being wary of the dev, being concerned that this will simply lead to the game being abandoned. But based on the way the dev was talking about the game before they began the remake, it would have absolutely been abandoned already if they hadn't gone this route. The dev wasn't happy with what they had, and was having trouble with the old code.
I hope they get the updates moving faster and put people's minds at ease, but who knows. They very well may just be milking, and their subs are putting up with it. I'm not giving them any money, so I'm not overly concerned at this point. I've enjoyed the stuff in the remake so far. I like the changes to the characters, and the story. I hope it continues far beyond what the previous version had in terms of content, with a far more coherent and intentional story.
