Thoughts On Remakes

It genuinely depends on how it's done. Generally speaking though, remakes can be good, provided they don't make the same mistake movie producers do when they make a film adaptation of a book. Which is taking the concept of the book, and turning it on its head, completely alienating the original fan base.

If someone could fix the crap that is sandboxes, they would become my idol.

The games of NTL is Media is so good .. their games what makes me started to play these kind of games . im really addicted into it 😢

There are at lot of older games that are dated or games that got abandoned that I'd love to see get remakes. I'm also a fan of remaking games in Ren'py that were made using different engines

Yup love it when you can find a Ren'py version of a game

I think it's already saturated with many remakes on the market, I miss new intellectual properties.

Rightful ownership is a game worth finishing

If the original is not complete, do not remake it.
If the original is abandoned and some other dev wants to remake it, do not upload the game till is at least half the size of what the original was.

Remakes are mostly made when the devs don't know how to continue the game. It's usually bad news

Good basic renpy remakes of games from bad engines are great, just not too common sadly :(

Remakes can be great when done right, especially for games that deserve a modern update to reach new audiences or enhance the experience for long-time fans. A good remake stays true to the original's spirit while improving visuals, gameplay, and accessibility. However, unnecessary remakes—especially for games that still hold up well—can feel like cash grabs. When developers put effort into adding meaningful improvements or expanding the story, like Resident Evil 4 Remake or Final Fantasy VII Remake, they can be amazing. It’s all about striking the right balance between nostalgia and innovation.

Sandbox games are complex and require a lot of time to watch a sexual scene and worse, it's only for a blowjob, waste of time. There are also sandboxes that are easy and I prefer this.
The remake for me is fine only when the game ends or it just started, imagine that the content is well advanced until you think the end is coming but the dev returns to the beginning it is a disappointment

There are many different kinds of remakes. Some are often a precursor of abandonment, but complaining about the remake often means shooting the messenger as typically the choice isn't between finishing the game and starting to remake it, but between abandoning it right away for lack of motivation, or trying to make the motivation return by remaking the game.

What I would like to see more often is when an otherwise good game is implemented with a sub-optimal engine or in Ren'Py with a broken sandbox (or even a good one) , to remake it as a pure visual novel implemented in Ren'Py. If the original game was already in Ren'Py, this can ideally be done by adding a VN path to the existing game. Some developers manage to do it in such a way that you can switch paths at any point, but I think if that's too much work it's really not necessary. The real point is that by doing both in one file you reduce the number of downloads. 99% of the file size is assets that can be shared.

I would also like to see inofficial remakes. When a developer is good at producing renders but has difficulties with the literary side, they could choose an older game that has a good plot but some serious defect such as being a Windows-only Japanese visual novel in a clunky engine and with only a poor fan translation. To prevent copyright issues, change all the names and the appearance of the characters. Also change some fundamentals in such a way that the original plot still works with only minor changes. For the rest, improve where possible and otherwise just copy the original approach.

Similarly, and generalizing the topic a little, I would like to see good AVN adaptations of classical literature and movies. In a way these are also remakes. Everyone does Harry Potter. Why not remake the hilarious 1920 Zorro movie with Douglas Fairbanks as a sex comedy? Or the 1931 Dracula movie with Bela Lugosi? It is a scandal that (to my knowledge) not a single piece of pornographic writing by the Marquis de Sade has been remade as an AVN. This makes no sense. Just about every second porn movie in the second half of the 20th century was of this type, and it made sense despite the enormous amounts of censorship and self-censorship this required. An AVN adaptation could be much more bold.

Dancing eyes, you run along grids and cut girls cloths, it was the first spicy (to me at the time) game I play. It was going to get a remake2011 but that was squashed due to public outcry.

Remakes can be good if the original has had significant time before it was started and can be limited by older concepts or programming which now make a remake worth it. It is always a sad one when a game is shortly into development then the team disbands and a portion of the team split to then remake the game again and nothing ever gets done, looking at you LOK.

If a game's been finished and there's actual reasons to go back and change things (broken/missing content, things that just didn't work out as well as planned), then sure. If it's just a classic game that people liked and the publisher/dev wants to cash in on nostalgia by releasing a "modern" remake, then forget about it.

Good games don't need remakes, because if they're good then people will still play them.

I still think that the only good thing about remake is that new 3d models, good for rule34

Rick and Morty: Another Way Home was a good remake, would like to see more remakes

I think that the fairest way to handle a remake of an abandoned game is to do a Continuation instead.
Don't try to update the Original work of the Dev, but instead continue the VN as a New Chapter keeping consistent with the earlier intellectual property.
Chances are it was abandoned simply because the Dev ran out of fresh ideas, and could not bring it to a conclusion.
Having a new Dev continue the story has saved a lot of I.P.'s (example: Dr. Who, Star Trek, etc..)

I would like someone to take over the game Aftermath and finish it, or remake it.
