Thoughts On Remakes

I'd like to see Bad Bobby remade by a solid developer.

All the remakes I've seen are to remove the "loli" characters, so fuck'em. As for regular remakes, I've never had the urge to play a game again only because it got a graphics update to be honest.

Remake has to have a point. Otherwise it may come off as a milking project. Whole "remaking" process is often times a bullshit that gets stretched way beyond its intended time. Since dev doesn't remake the story most of the time. He remakes the images to look more up to date.
Unless of course the remake is adding more scenes.

Personally I think it's better to have a finished project rather than flashy looking one that looks nice but delays development by another year. Take Parental Love, right? Very popular, very liked.
Except the visuals aren't something out of this world. Not to compared to devs another project that has way better visuals.
But guess what. Parental Love despite all that is a full finished story. Sometimes that overtakes the need to have nice looking visuals.

Restarting like halfway through is total bullshit. It's like I already did that and want to move on. It's also often a precurser to abandonment.

When it comes to VN's I don't mind remakes if the product is already finished and just being re-rendered and new GUI or scenes to improve the game as it is.

When it comes to AAA games being made, please. Lord stop the madness. I don't want to buy the 15th remake of skyrim.

Non-porn: Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines,
Please, God, no, they would totally fuck it up somehow. As much as I would love to see an ACCURATE modern re-take on it, I can't think of a studio today who wouldn't totally screw it up.

I see a lot of RPGM games where I like the premise, but don't want to play the sprite running around finding scenes. Hero Part Fall or something like that comes to mind and I wish it would be made in Renpy.

I've seen a couple where they try, but it ends up fucked up. I absolutely won't play anything RPGmaker. Walking around a bad map always sucks, and if it's not true sandbox it's a waste of time.

Prefer to play a classic game as is. Shiny grafics are nice but not necessary.

I like remakes when they happen AFTER the original game has been released.
If a dev want to restart their project, they should at least make a hasty ending to the version they are making now so some people get closure without having to wait for another 12 years.

I also like remakes that build upon and expand of content from the original to make it bigger and better. I don't like remakes that are just using the same title and characters, but largely a completely different plotpoint set in some alternate timeline or universe (looking at you FF7-R).

I like remakes that keep the spirit of the original game.
Cannot stand "rebuilds" where the dev just decides to abandon work in progress to restart in a new engine and promises updates won't be as slow as before.

(Updates will be slower than before if they don't just straight abandon it)
Looking at you Summertime Saga and Venture Seas...

There's also the games that get continued with original developer permission but the new developers completely change the art style to be unrecognizable to the original (Slice of Venture series).

Depends on what we are remaking, hate so much that we are getting remakes for last of us or horizon zero dawn, but the VN remakes are worth it and still pray everyday to get a remake of Crystalis from back on NES

Also used to hope that Kojima would remake the original Metal Gear games from before the solid series (to complete the story loop mostly and update graphics), but now dread Konami touching any of that

I'm not sure if it's a unpopular opinion but I rather a game not get remade unless it was already completed. Most of the times, games just get abandoned and/or developer use remake as a way to prolong fundings from their subscribers and it become so painfully obvious.

alexandra, the best example of lazy abandonment i can think of, but dickhead isn't going to revisit and fix it, he's more or less demonstrated that (though it would go a ways towards restoring some credibility). i can't even remember what he's working on now but alexandra did a retarded barrelroll off a cliff and was rushed into a sad premature grave. intimate relations from him is "completed" too, but isn't. in that vein viitgames could (should) properly finish haley's story, plot threads were abandoned late in that game's story as well in order to just call it a wrap, but he too would seem to prefer to work on much less popular fare.

there are abandoned games it'd be nice if they were finished like kindread: the redburns. dunno about remake. some guy wanted to remake our fate but ced came out of the woodwork to shut him down, though not to return to work on the game. was for the best however as that other guy went on to head his not-remake of our fate and it was proof he can't write for shit and that his remake would've been crap anyway. reluctant archon, rainy days, sins of the father (whose dev came back recently, put out a half-assed update, then abandoned it again for good). still though the idea of a remake/continuation by another dev/team rubs the wrong way for any of these games. let sleeping dogs lie i guess, it's all about bilking money anymore anyway.

Depends on the game. An older or abandoned game being remade with more confidence behind its development is a good thing, but a lot of "remakes" are just blatant cash grabs...

I know what we all need. Another Big Brother remake.

i dont mind remakes if its by a dif person and the original is abandoned, what i dont really like is when a dev decides to remake a game they are already working on unless it was actually really bad, just finish the game first

As long as they finish the original story before they remake it.

Speaking of abandoned projects, my choice:
Midlife Crisis
Red Lucy
SexNote.
But the question is, will the new developer be able to maintain the level of the original? I'm personally not sure about that.
