This first paragraph of Goldstein's textbook "States of Matter" is hard to beat in my opinion.
But, post your favorites.

BTW: This was the subject of my grad thesis. Might explain a lot, might not.

Clearly the greatest of all is the
"You might ask yourself how I got myself into this situation, well let me explain..."
 
I'm quite sure it was the first and the last time when you laughed reading that book.
 
I just showed my family and they all looked at me like I was an idiot. Apparently, only certain kinds of people see the humor.
