So they could make it so a account has flags posting the same shit or mass posting only like a robot can do but na fuck that ID verification then sell that data and what the users are doing.

That happens, large portions of Reddit are dead, not because of weeding out bots, but because nobody will post anything even remotely controversial, risqué, unpopular, or critical of authority, for fear of their post being tied back to their real identity.

I know there's such things as fake ID and there's always ways to get around it, but it takes extra dedication to do that, something most people don't have.

Government level intel agencies and similar could probably tie it back to a real person if they wanted to, but at least it took some effort, so they'd only go for genuine threats (think terrorism), not someone disagreeing with the current administration (either side of the aisle). Now all they'll have to do is ask a tame judge for a court order and Reddit will hand over the IDs of thousands of people who called the president a name.

On one hand, I understand why they feel they need to have ID verification, but on the other hand it kind of completely defeats the purpose of being able to make random alts on Reddit. Plus, with all the leaks that happen constantly, I wouldn't trust giving some place like reddit my ID. Like, at all.

They already requires phone numbers in alot of cases and not to mention they IP ban common vpns. They already have plenty of personal data it's bullshit.

I had to delete so many bookmarks for reddit from dead subs you are right about tracking them that one group was upset with post about them and via reddit admins they tracked people to there homes.

I suppose it goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway.
DO NOT COMPLY.

Online security is a serious matter; it’s not a joke or something to be taken lightly. Thinking your information is safe just because a big company is asking for it is stupid—it’s the big companies that tend to suffer massive data breaches practically every year. No database is impenetrable; it’s never a question of if it will be breached, but when it will be breached and how much data will be stolen.

Not to mention that it’s well known that these companies asking for your personal information share it with other companies that use it for their own purposes—usually to refine the practices of shady operators. Information that can then be sold and distributed in various circles as they see fit, never asking for your permission and never apologizing when it’s leaked.

The basic rules of online safety are:
- Never share your personal information with anyone.
- Never believe everything you see, read, or hear. Always verify it.
- There is no such thing as a completely safe space; always stay vigilant.
- If something seems even slightly suspicious, it is definitely dangerous.
- If something happens, no matter the severity, take immediate action.

To think that this nonsense about online ID verification is “okay” or “not so bad” is to think that breaking one of those rules is ‘okay’ or “not so bad”—and you deserve EVERY bad thing that might happen to you, just as someone who provokes a wild animal has no right to complain about being attacked.

The internet is NOT a game; online interactions ARE real interactions.
You should always act responsibly, just as you would if you were in a room with other people.

Seems the internet ID check is spreading like a plague. Rarely use Reddit anymore though.

As it's become nothing but echo chambers were you can never disagree.

i dont know how true it is but i heard that reddit wants to use apple faceid feature to verify someones age
