I'm thinking of using Proton as my VPN.
What feedback have you had on this VPN (logs, security, privacy, etc.)?

Been using protonvpn for over a year. Pretty good

I use it. Not had any issues.

I used to use ProtonVPN. It's good, didn't have any real problems like other people are saying. I'm currently using Mullvad because I like how anonymous they keep the process, for example with payment. They take privacy pretty seriously and keep very little info on customers. Also works very well on Linux, plus the 5.50USD per month lets you use it on 5 devices which is nice.

But tbh you can't go wrong with Proton

I’m too lazy to search for it, but they made some very open blog posts about exactly which data authorities can force them to cough up.

Some people criticized this, because they somehow think that VPNs should break the law (and get shut down) before cooperating with authorities. However, all companies that stay around have to work with authorities to some extent, and their willingness to reveal the exact extent of this makes them a much more trustworthy partner.

Their solution is to have as close to zero data about their clients as possible, so that even if they are forced to hand this data over, there is nothing to give up. As I recall the limitations are:

1) Use anonymous payment methods or a free account so that they don’t have any access to your banking data. (Though it might be that they delete that as well, been a while since I looked into it.)
2) If the authorities already know your real IP-address, or your Proton account, they can tell Proton to start monitoring your access. As I recall, Proton did send the person they used as an example a message, telling them that authorities were after them and that their future Proton use would be compromised. (Again, this is a many-year-old memory.)

The privacy YouTubers I used to follow ranked Proton as one of the top VPN companies in every rubric, as I recall. They only hand over information when forced to, they keep as little information as possible, their services have been vetted by outside security companies, their code is open source (or was at least opened to outside testers?). Basically, they have been doing everything correctly.

Proton is pretty good but at the end of the day it’s not going to give you complete anonymity.

I used to use mullvad until they scrapped the port forwarding feature. If you're not torrenting, I think mullvad is up there in term of privacy. Or whichever one is having a sale.

Proton VPN claims they have a strict no-logs policy, meaning it allegedly does not track or store information
about your online activity or VPN session data.

It's free relatively lightweight and has a no logs policy. Based in Switzerland and the same company that runs Protonmail. They even have a free app for convenience on your phone.

That said if the government REALLY wants to track you they still can, a VPN isn't a magical "you can never send me to jail card" it protects against untargeted government surveillance and third party tracking.
