Is it just me, or are more than 90% of DAZ-made characters in games unattractive? I can't be the only one who feels this way.
Why is that? I know HS2 characters tend to look very similar, but at least they usually look great.
Maybe it just comes down to personal preference?

Probably more of a personal preference. I havent paid too much attention to the males though

Mostly personal preference.
You'll find people who love DAZ but detest Illusion Games (Honey Select, Koikatsu) and vice versa.

Most of the time it's the uncanny valley, this is different for everybody.
DAZ tries to be realistic, but that makes it very prone to the uncanny valley effect. They also usually have the typical fake Instagram look.
While Illusion Games models are more unrealistic and tend to be anime, but this is also something people don't like.

Personal preference I suppose. I usually don't rate the model alone but the whole scene. They reach from plain and muddy to well shaded and sharp. The latter the better in my opinion.

For some reason there seem to be some very vocal Honey Select haters and DAZ lovers around, but nothing like that the other way around. Which is strange because I share the opinion that DAZ models are mostly distorted to the point of ugly. Perhaps Honey Select models are more idealized; they are certainly more beautiful and less variable, at least in practice. It seems that the only common way for developers to make them ugly is by cranking up the breast size too much.

Elaborate please. Are you saying that you don’t automatically (meaning subconsciously) assess whether a female character is attractive or not? I'm not talking about doing it only during the sex scenes but on all of the renders

Glad someone shares my view! I also noticed there is hardly anyone who hates DAZ characters for their looks

I do assess the attractivity of characters in games. This happens at the beginning of every game and before any sex scenes, given there are other scenes before the first sex scene. I just don't care that much about it and I don't think it's 90% but less. I'm fine with ugly characters in games and more importantly I think the render quality should allow for other characters to be beautiful in my view. I am currently playing a Games+ game which has the DAZ tag. The renders are plain and muddy and the game does not contain a single beautiful character in my opinion. I am convinced this would not be the case if the renders were well shaded and sharp. So while well shaded and sharp renders allow for beautiful and ugly characters a plain and muddy render renders any character ugly.

I think it's personal preference, actually i hate when character look similar to another game

i really didn't like daz chars from gen1-2 but gen3-8 are so good, try downloading the program and play with some morphs and textures

I've seen too many games with DAZ type models when trying to look for the "most downloaded" / "highest rated" / "most viewed" games that it filled my heart with a little too much hatred. It's kind of like scrolling social media but then you get hit with a post with a song that sounds pretty good, but it's whatever so you scroll past and hit another post with that song and it's like, dang dude chill out brother, and you scroll more and later hit another and now you're annoyed with hearing that damned song so many times that you eventually start to hate on it whenever you hear it.

but eventually, you come to realize that maybe you didn't hate the song, but you hated the saturation of the song, and how much you'd heard it in such little time, so you decide to be an adult and tell yourself to listen for a bit and just take it in so you do. and you don't hate the song.

Many will say personal preference, but now that I've used DS for a few months some of the issue is modeling work, lighting, camera angles and skin processing. Just setting bump mapping can make or break skin texture, for instance. Right out of the box G3/8/8.1 characters need loving to really shine and most people either don't know how or don't have the time to really get good looking images. I'd rather get 10 so-so renders than 1 great render in my VN. I don't have an hour to tweak my models. Morphs and shaders already take too much time.

DAZ characters tend to look very same-y and plastic/uncanny. There are some people that can bring magic out of the newer models, but i imagine it takes some effort and skill. It obvious some people just leave it at "good enough".

But also, where would the games be without DAZ? It lowers the barrier of entry to 3D graphics by a mile and I'd rather have mid DAZ characters than nothing at alll

Well I think its always about lighting. Without good light everthing looks unnatural.

I prefer the DAZ characters, though.
They can be truly magnificent, like in Kalin's game : Alienated.
