Twisting and screaming, that's how the world met Mel'Rai: a mistake, something that should never have hatched. He horrified everyone who laid eyes on that abominable newborn. No one knows how he managed to survive, but he did not stop growing: taller than any other Kenku, skeletal, sickly, grotesque. Despised by his own kind because of his extreme birth deformity—mistaken as a sign of having been touched by something unnatural—Mel'Rai eventually became convinced of this himself.
Attributing his withered existence to an aberrant entity, he sought refuge in the solitude of self-exile; but that only made those thoughts take deeper root in his damaged psyche... until he began to hear it: the growls of his shattered mind, interpreted as something else. Whispers became voices, and voices became commands; commands that Mel'Rai carried out for his nonexistent master, thus awakening his power—the power of the Shadowfell—amid shrill shrieks of joy, despair, and madness.
Thus was born the legend of Mel'Rai, the gruesome Shadow Sorcerer who carries out the strangest tasks for his ethereal lord, spreading his unreal influence wherever he goes.

So, basically, he is a Kenku who was born deformed (gigantism), and that is why others think he has been touched by an unnatural entity. Even Mel'Rai himself believed it. He believed it so much that his mind, already damaged by loneliness and suffering, broke, creating a false entity that he believes is behind everything, even though it does not exist, and now serves him as if it were his master. He thinks his power comes from his master as an Aberrant Sorcerer, but in reality, he is a Shadow Sorcerer.
