Yeah there is a lot of name duplication in these games so mixing up is needed

Honestly? It often depends on the name itself. If I like it, I usually leave it as is, unless I have a specific reason to change it. I'm very unlikely to have a Mathilda or a Gertrude in my games however. :)

I have to add something, that crossed my mind. Many games have a character with my daughter´s name as default (no I will not tell you which here, even if you literally suck me off).
While maybe a lot of people would love that or even change a character to the name of relatives, it disturbed me a lot in the beginning and I changed it every time, I got the possibility to do. But in the meanwhile I am able to separate my feelings. So it is fine as it is.
That's 100% valid and understandable. I never even took that into consideration but makes sense. Not the same but I know there's a game where the love Interest's name was my friend's sister's name. who is like a best friend to me. Like yeah I can separate the two obviously. But did feel weird at first.

If I was better at coming up with names I'd probably rename the characters more often but since I'm shit at it I just stick with whatever the dev named them

For me it depends a lot on the game.

In some games, the love interests are also kind of blank slates, without much personality of her own, then it makes sense to change the names.

In other games, they have a lot of personality and then I prefer to keep the original names.

Depends on 3 factors:
1. I hate the original name
2. The original name dont fits the chara or needs to be changed for incest
3. The game only allows up to 7 charas to be named...i dont want to waste most of the game-time with renaming charas ^^

I like naming the MC, but don't care about the girls, unless they have names I don't like or can't pronounce... lol

I do the same. In the beginning I liked to rename the side characters. But not anymore. What I still do is renaming the MC. That is kind of obligatory for me.
Yep absolutely - i always rename the MC but no one else.

I need renaming in case I don't like a name (if it matches someone IRL especially), and sometimes I will use it when I start a long game to remind me who they are (ex: David is Dad, Mona is Mom, Stacey is sister, Audrey is aunt, Candice is cousin, etc).

I find that renaming the side-characters can be a real waste of time, especially if there are many LIs (as in harem-type VNs). Other than the MC's name, which I always change given the chance, it would be convenient if the Devs gave a blanket choice at the start of the VN; something like "Other than the MC, do you want to change any other character's names (Y/N)?" Also - and I believe it may have been previously referred to in other posts - renaming, and then having to remember the altered names can cause real confusion

It depends in some games I really don’t like the names they gave the character and then I will rename and in other games it’s fine.

I generally use the name of the characters as-is. It would have to be a terrible name for me to bother changing it. I remember this one game where, if you choose to rename the characters, the game doesn't give you the default names... it was terribly annoying!

I have never encountered the case where I had to name a love interest, and I hope I never will. Fortunately it's rare enough that you get asked if you want to. It's just a waste of time/clicks. (This goes for the MC as well, except it's rampant there because so many demand it.)

The only case when it really makes sense is when a game is a parody of some existing film/franchise/... and needs to avoid the original names for legal reasons. Then you can override the replacement names with the original ones. But even that would be better handled with a patch. The game just needs to prepare things so that the names can be switched by a simple patch.
