If you're going to make it sci-fi, the plot ought to be sci-fi-ish, like a escaping from a black hole or resolving a conflict with an AI race or whatever. Likewise, if the setting is fantasy, make it a fantasy plot, like discovering the hidden cult of a mad elder god or preparing for the prophesied attack of dragons.

But if your sci-fi or fantasy VN is about the MC in space ranger college or wizard college trying to get a date for the prom, then it's just cosplay.

There isn't enough fantasy games where the graphics are of high quality to match any story/world building - I think if a dev comes along and gets that right, you'd have a hugely successful game.

Fantasy and sci fi is a form of escapism. Some people just want to have an adventrue in the world that is different from ours and make them forget about thier problems for some time.

Fantasy is overused in all games, not just adult games in my opinion. If you took out all of the games that had magic, monsters or aliens, there'd be nothing left. Games set in the current, modern world are pretty rare by comparison.

I'm a little weird in the sense that i love fantasy settings for movies, tv, gaming (both video or tabletop).
But when it comes to AVNs, relationship stuff, i prefer "real world" settings by a wide margin.
Slice of life, ordinary guy who isn't on a mission to save the world... just trying to get laid/meet a nice girl.

No, I feel like I see just as many sci-fi as I do fantasy.

So not technically overused but I still don't actually prefer it. Neither of them actually. Almost every single time someone makes a game set in a fantasy/sci-fi setting, or high-school but with demon anime powers or whatever, it's just absolute shit that doesn't help the story whatsoever and is just a distraction from the sex. There are exceptions but they're few and far between.

Like come on dude, no one actually cares about the power system you came up with. That's not why anyone is here playing these games. If you want to do something like that, make it a normal VN that isn't a porn game. They are JUST going to distract from one another.

If the story works better in a fantasy setting use the fantasy setting. There are many not great fantasy porn games but there are also many great fantasy porn games. Story is what matters most.

There are so many good games and stories these days, and I say the more the better. no matter what genre they come from.
