I think it only feels overused if you play a lot of RPGMaker-based games. Because most of the free art available for it (and even what is bundled in) is medieval fantasy style, so that's what game devs build upon.

It's an umbrella term. Anything not set in reality is Fantasy, including scifi or post-apocalypse

Not as far as tags are concerned. Sci Fi is another tag. post apocalypse gets dystopian setting. Fantasy means the shit with like elves, etc and magic - usually a medieval like setting. I prefer realistic, modern setting. Realistic as far as how things work, not the difficulty getting sex part.
