How long do you give VNs to catch your interest?

Most of the times, i decide from the start, or from the first 5 minutes i the game was just for the pics or if i wanted to get the story.
Sometimes, games i decided to just skip from scene to scene will show me something i wasn't expecting, i would stop and return to reread, and then maybe decide there to actually pay attention to the story

about 30min to a hour by that time something should happen that keeps my attention

If a VN failed to enthrall me in the first 30-40 minutes of playthrough, I delete it without regret, without searching for “hot” scenes. Such was the fate of Grandma's House.
Finally someone said it.
I just played Grandma's House recently and I could not get through the constant hugging/cuddling, sappy snuggle wuggle bear bullshit, the unavoidable romance with a certain character, and the cringeworthy dialogue. But if you dare say anything bad about that holy grail of adult games on the F site, you get piled on and treated like a troll by the echo chamber.

I used to be very susceptible to sunk cost fallacy. Even if I didn't like the start of a game, I would hold on to the hope that it would get better as the dev gained more experience. But bad writing habits are a real thing, and the toxic positivity from supporters often means the game will not get better with time. When I start skipping, I stop caring. When I stop caring, I uninstall it. Time is a valuable resource.

Honestly, if the first few female characters that show up aren't to my liking, I might close the game. 😅

I keep going as long as my inner strength and patience last. If I don't like a game, I try to be patient and keep playing, giving the developer every chance to win me over, even if they didn’t manage to do so at the start. I hold out as long as I can — until my patience finally snaps: either the game eventually grows on me, or I become mentally exhausted and simply “break,” at which point I skip through the rest of the update using the “Skip all text” Ctrl button, at least evaluating the visual side of the remaining part of the game. In a sense, I follow the approach of a professional reviewer: I try to play through most of a game, treating it as a work of art, in order to have the full right to criticize it. After all, drawing conclusions after only the first hour of a long game is usually considered unprofessional.

basically if the female characters interest me. if not then I don't even try it.

If the story/plot is interesting, and the girls are attractive / renders are good, ill play it to the end, even if the lewd content is lacking. If the story/plot is weak , but the girls are attractive/renders are good ill probably play to the end but skip alot. If story/plot is bad and girls are not attractive/renders are bad i might give it 5-10 mins.

that honestly valid of a way of picking a vn game
no thats gotta be insane i've played so many games where the best girl only shows up halfway though that game, you gotta at least skim through and see if there are any baddies

I mean, if ya meet multiple in the beginning, ya don't like it's valid to give up on i,t why invest?

I agree, why waste the time if you have to slog through content you're not enjoying just on the off chance there is a character you may like. Maybe I'm just lazy though lol

I can usually tell pretty quickly - at least with the standard VNs. Some games trick me. I played silver witch trainer for like 8 hours before I realized what a grind it was for little payout and how bored I was. So I guess they had a good hook and got me with that, but a standard story based VN I will know in 15 minutes.

That is the worst when it sucks you in quickly but after awhile you realize your just not having any fun.

I am an avid fan of VNs just because of a certain few that felt like striking gold and really sucking me into the story. More in the past than recently... so I figured I would ask here. At what point do you give in to the Skip Unseen Text option and just skim to the naughty bits? What was the point that made you lose interest? Let me know.
I try to give the VN as much time as I can, but when I know I could be doing something better (grinding in another game) I sometimes can’t justify it. I usually give the VN half an hour and if it doesnt interest me even a little bit, to the trash bin it goes
