How long do you give VNs to catch your interest?

Poor writing, or 45+ minutes without a lewd scene and I'm generally out.
I'm playing My Real Desire right now and the balance of story to lewd scenes is terrible. I've started using the skip button.

Honestly i can usually tell if the (writing) is going to put me off with in 10 minutes, a good example for me although i really like the renders.. and tried to stick with them... are all the Gore games ive tried. the story doesnt even make sense to me its jumping around in time and assuming knowledge of character guessing maybe from other VNs ? Was completely off putting to me.

Past that AVNs that force certain fetishes, that just takes me out of the story some. Im personally ok with a slow going story as long as the plot (even if dumb, ive seen some weird ones) is coherent and flows well.

I'm a bit impatient so usually 10 - 20 min. It does depend on who made it though I usually give bigger names more time.

About 15 minutes is usually enough to see if the righting or visuals are going to be good or a disaster

I usually give about an hour before I start skipping text. I'll skip for maybe another hour before I stop playing entirely if it fails to capture my interest

I've found myself being pretty generous with the time I give to VNs, often sticking with them for at least 5-10 hours before deciding if they're really holding my attention - there have been some that started slow but really drew me in after that initial investment.

I usually give about an hour but if a character say or do something I dislike the game ends there

I mostly filter out based on screenshots and tags well enough that usually like what I download.

Typically though my rule of thumb is that the story has to keep me interested enough to make it to the first sex scene, and I have to like the first sex scene.

If those two things are not true I trash it.

Usually VNs are divided into chapters, acts, etc. If I'm not interested by the end of the first chapter, I pass by.

Depends, if there are tags that I usually like I stick around for a bit.

Not very. If it goes much at all with no actual sex (as in the kind not ending in "job") I consider it blueballing and get bored.
