Making a VN with Renpy is easier then 95% of game maker softwares, trying to do too much more and it's harder, but you can do just about anything you could do in a Twine/Sugercube game and it'll likely be easier then said alternative. Downside is that Twine version would likely look better, and get more players interested in your game. The UI for renpy is also often nothing of high quality but it can be customized and even replaced if your skilled enough, however this is beyond your scope most likely.

It's so easy for basic visual novel creation. Can't say the same thing when your game needs more complexity.

My advice is to chose your editor wisely, as stated above, you kan use any txt editor, but I have chosen notepad++ because it has the ability to format your .rpy files in a way that makes it a lot easier to not loose oversight of what your are doing.

I use "Sublime Text" It's free.
